One night Abū Ayyūb woke and said: He spends the night above the head of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so they spent the night to one side. When morning came he mentioned that to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "The lower part is more comfortable for me." Abū Ayyūb said: I will not be above a roof under which you are. So Abū Ayyūb moved to the lower part and the Prophet ﷺ to the upper part. And from Ibn ʿAbbās: That when the Messenger of God ﷺ came out from Khaybar with Ṣafiyyah, he entered the tent with his sword and placed his head upon the tent. When morning came the Messenger of God ﷺ heard movement and said: "Who is this?" He said: I am Abū Ayyūb. He said: "What is your matter?" He said: O Messenger of God, a young girl recently married, and she has done to her husband what she has done, so I did not trust her. I said: If she moves I will be close to you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O Abā Ayyūb," twice. And from a man of the people of Makkah, that Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah was the commander of the army in which Abū Ayyūb raided. He entered upon him at the time of death, and he said to him: When I die, convey peace to the people from me, and tell them that I heard the Messenger ﷺ say: "Whoever dies without associating anything with God, God will place him in Paradise." And let them carry me and take me as far into the land of the Romans as they can. He said: He spoke to the people when Abū Ayyūb died, and the people armed themselves and set out with his funeral. And from Abū Ẓabyān, he said: Abū Ayyūb raided with Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. He said: He said: When I die, take me into the land of the enemy and bury me beneath your feet where you meet the enemy. He said: Then he said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Whoever dies without associating anything with God will enter Paradise." And from al-Aʿmash, I heard Abū Ẓabyān, and he mentioned it, and he said in it: And I will tell you a ḥadīth I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ; were it not for this state of mine I would not tell it to you. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Whoever dies without associating anything with God will enter Paradise." And from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, that he said when death came to him: I have concealed from you something I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, saying: "Were it not that you sin, God would create a people who sin and then forgive them." And in my view this ḥadīth and the one before it are what carried Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah toward a degree of irjāʾ, and because of it he committed many acts that were disapproved of, and God Almighty knows best. Al-Wāqidī said: Abū Ayyūb died in the land of the Romans in the year fifty-two, and was buried near Constantinople, and his grave is there; the Romans seek rain by it when drought afflicts them. It is said that he is buried within the wall of Constantinople, and upon his grave is a shrine and a mosque, and they venerate it. Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī said: He died in the year fifty-five. The first is more firmly established, and God knows best. And from al-Walīd, he said: A shaykh from the people of Palestine told me: That he saw a white structure within the wall of Constantinople, and they said: This is the grave of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ. So I came to that structure, and I saw his grave in that structure, and upon it was a lamp suspended by a chain. And from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Two men set out for the mosque and pray, and one of them departs while his prayer is weightier than Uḥud, and the other departs while his prayer does not equal the weight of a speck of dust." Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī said: And how can that be, O Messenger of God? He said: "When one of them is better in intellect." He said: And how can that be? He said: "When one of them is more scrupulous regarding God's prohibitions and more eager to hasten to good, even if he is lesser than the other in supererogatory acts." And from Abū Ayyūb, he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to a man who asked him to teach him and be brief: "When you pray a prayer, pray the prayer of one bidding farewell, and do not speak any word for which you must apologize, and resolve to despair of what is in people's hands." ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays b. Sulaym, Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī; he is Abū Mūsā ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays b. Sulaym b. Ḥiḍār b. Ḥarb b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAnz b. Bakr b. ʿĀmir b. ʿUdhr b. Wāʾil b. Nājiyah b. Jumāhir b. al-Ashʿar al-Ashʿarī al-Yamānī. His mother was Ẓabyah bt. Wahb b. ʿAkk; she embraced Islam and died in Madinah. He was light of body, short, and scant-bearded. He came to Makkah and made an alliance with Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, then embraced Islam in Makkah and emigrated to the land of Abyssinia, then came with the people of the two ships while the Messenger of God ﷺ was at Khaybar. Al-Wāqidī mentioned this, but Ibn ʿUbayd, Ibn Isḥāq, and Abū Maʿshar did not mention him among those who emigrated to Abyssinia. Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jahm said: Abū Mūsā was not among the emigrants to Abyssinia, and he had no alliance with Quraysh. He had embraced Islam in Makkah early, then returned to the land of his people and remained there until he and a group of Ashʿarīs came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Their arrival coincided with the arrival of the people of the two ships, Jaʿfar and his companions, from the land of Abyssinia, and coincided with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Khaybar. When Abū Mūsā and his companions drew near to Madinah, they began reciting rajaz and saying: Tomorrow we shall meet the beloved ones, Muḥammad and his party. And from Abū Hurayrah, he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ entered the mosque and heard the recitation of a man and said: "Who is this?" It was said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays. He said: "This one has been given a flute of the flutes of the family of David." And from Anas, he said: When Abū Mūsā slept, he would put on clothes at bedtime for fear that his private parts might become exposed. And from Ibn Sīrīn, he said: Abū Mūsā said: I bathe in the empty house and modesty before my Lord prevents me from straightening my back. The Messenger of God ﷺ appointed him with Muʿādh over Yemen, and ʿUmar made him his deputy over al-Baṣrah, and he conquered Tustar, and he witnessed ʿUmar's sermon at al-Jābiyah, and ʿUthmān appointed him over al-Kūfah. He was one of the two arbiters between ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah, and when they met, ʿAmr deceived Abū Mūsā. He was among the Quran reciters and jurists of the Companions, and he had the best voice among the Companions in his time. Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī said: I have never heard the sound of a harp, a barbaṭ, or a flute sweeter than the voice of Abū Mūsā. It is established in the ḥadīth that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "This one has been given a flute of the flutes of the family of David." ʿUmar used to say to him: Remind us of our Lord, O Abā Mūsā. Then he would recite while they listened. Al-Shaʿbī said: ʿUmar wrote in his will that no governor of mine should be confirmed for more than a year except Abū Mūsā; let him be confirmed for four years. Ibn al-Jawzī mentioned in al-Muntaẓim that he died in this year, and that is the saying of some of them. It is said that he died a year before it. It is said: in the year forty-two. And other things are said. And God knows best. His death occurred in Makkah when he withdrew from the people after the arbitration, and it is said: at a place called al-Thawiyyah, two miles from al-Kūfah. He was short, thin of body, scant-bearded, that is, without a beard, ؓ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal; ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal, Abū Saʿīd: He was one of the weepers and one of those whom ʿUmar sent to al-Baṣrah to instruct the people in jurisprudence. From Khuzāʿī b. Ziyād, he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal saw in a dream that the Hour had come and people were being presented at a certain place. He said: I knew that whoever passed that place would be saved, so I went to draw near to it. He said: Behind you! Do you wish to be saved while you have what you have? No, by God. He said: I awoke in terror and woke his family. At that hour he had a chest full of dinars, and he said: O so-and-so, show me that chest—may God disfigure it and disfigure what is in it. [He did not awake until he had distributed it,] and he left not a single dinar of it. When the illness in which he died came, he instructed his family, saying: Only my companions should handle me, and Ibn Ziyād must not pray over me. When he died they sent to Abū Barzah and ʿĀʾidh b. ʿAmr and a number of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they took charge of washing and shrouding him. When they brought him out, there was Ibn Ziyād with his retinue at the door. It was said to him: He instructed that you not pray over him. So he walked with him until he reached opposite al-Bayḍāʾ, then he turned toward al-Bayḍāʾ and left him. ʿAbd Allāh died in al-Baṣrah. ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿUbayd b. Khalaf; ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿUbayd b. Khalaf b. ʿAbd Nahm, Abū Nujayd: He embraced Islam early and raided with the Messenger of God ﷺ in several campaigns. He remained in the land of his people, then moved to al-Baṣrah and settled there until he died there. And from Muḥammad b. Sīrīn, he said: No one came to al-Baṣrah among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ who surpassed ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn. Ibn Saʿd said: And from Muṭarrif, he said: ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn said to me: I felt that I was being greeted, and when I cauterized myself the greeting ceased. I said: Did the greeting come to you from the direction of your head or from the direction of your feet? He said: No, rather from the direction of my head. I said: I do not think you will die until that returns. Then later he said to me: I felt that the greeting returned to me. He said: Then he remained only a little while until he died. He said: And I said to ʿImrān: Nothing prevents me from visiting you except what I see of your condition. He said: Do not do that, for what is most beloved to me is most beloved to God, Mighty and Majestic. Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj; Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj b. Jafnah, Abū Nuʿaym: He came as a delegate to the Messenger of God ﷺ, witnessed the conquest of Egypt, and was the envoy to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ with the news of the conquest of Alexandria. He was one-eyed; his eye was lost in the war of Nubia with ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ in the year thirty-one. He held command over the raids on the Maghrib in the year thirty-four, the year forty, and the year fifty. Those who transmitted from him include ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samāʿah, Suwayd b. Qays, and others. He died in this year. Hāniʾ b. Niyār b. ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd; Hāniʾ b. Niyār b. ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd, Abū Burdah: He is the maternal uncle of al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib. He attended al-ʿAqabah with the seventy, and Badr, and all the battles with the Messenger of God ﷺ. He carried the banner of Banū Ḥārithah in the campaign of the conquest.
