Translation
✧ In the year fifty-two there occurred the expedition of Sufyān b. ʿAwf al-Azdī and his winter campaign in the land of the Byzantines, and that he died there, and he appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿadah al-Fazārī as his successor. This is the statement of al-Wāqidī. Others said: Rather, the one who wintered in the land of the Byzantines with the people in this year was Busr b. Abī Arṭāʾah, and with him was Sufyān b. ʿAwf, and the summer expedition in this year was led by Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī.
