The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ ✧ Those of the notables who died in this year Jaʿfar b. Abī Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib Jaʿfar b. Abī Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: He came with his father to the Messenger of God ﷺ and they both embraced Islam, and he fought alongside the Messenger of God ﷺ at Makkah and Ḥunayn and stood firm that day. Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik b. Naṣr b. Thaʿlabah Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik b. Naṣr b. Thaʿlabah, and it was said: Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jābir b. Mālik, he was called Abū ʿAmr, and it was said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He came to Madinah in Ramaḍān of the year ten and embraced Islam. He said: When I drew near to Madinah, I made my riding camel kneel, then I untied my saddlebag and put on my finery. I entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon, and I greeted him. The people stared at me, so I said to my companion: Did the Messenger of God ﷺ mention anything about me? He said: Yes, he mentioned you and spoke well of you among us while he was preaching. He said: “There will enter upon you now from this mountain pass — or from this gate — one of the best of the people of Yemen, on whose face is the mark of a king.” So I praised God for what He had bestowed upon me. When Jarīr came to pledge allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ, he spread a garment for him to sit upon, and said: “When a noble man of a people comes to you, honor him.” Jarīr was a leader among his people. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him to demolish Dhū al-Khalaṣah, which was a house belonging to Khathʿam called the Yemeni Kaʿbah, so he set it on fire. From al-Shaʿbī: ʿUmar was in a house with Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh and noticed an odor, so he said: I adjure the one who made this odor to rise and perform ablution. Jarīr said: O Commander of the Faithful, or let all the people perform ablution together. ʿUmar said: May God have mercy on you, what an excellent leader you were in the Jāhiliyyah, and what an excellent leader you are in Islam. Ibn Saʿd said: Yazīd b. Jarīr reported from his father that ʿUmar said to him while the people were wary of Iraq and fighting the Persians: March with your people, and whatever you conquer, a quarter of it is yours. When the spoils — the spoils of Jalūlāʾ — were gathered, Jarīr claimed that he had a quarter of all of it. Saʿd wrote to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb about that, and ʿUmar wrote: Jarīr has spoken the truth, and I did say that to him. If he wishes to be one who fought with his people for a payment, then give him his payment; and if he fought for God and for his religion and his honor, then he is a man of the Muslims, having what they have and owing what they owe. When the letter came to Saʿd, he informed Jarīr of that, and Jarīr said: The Commander of the Faithful has spoken the truth. I have no need of it; rather, I am a man of the Muslims. Scholars of the campaigns said: Jarīr was present with the Muslims on the day of al-Madāʾin, and when Kufa was established as a garrison town, he settled there. He remained there until the caliphate of ʿUthmān, then when the turmoil arose, he moved to Qarqīsiyā and lived there until he died and was buried there. From Khalīfah, who said: Jarīr settled in Qarqīsiyā and died there in the year fifty-one. Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā said likewise. Hishām b. Muḥammad al-Kalbī said: He died in the year fifty-four. Ḥārithah b. al-Nuʿmān b. Nafʿ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī Ḥārithah b. al-Nuʿmān b. Nafʿ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī: He witnessed Badr and all the battles with the Messenger of God ﷺ. From Muḥammad b. Saʿd, who said: Ḥārithah said: I saw Jibrīl twice: when the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Banū Qurayẓah, he passed by us in the form of Diḥyah, and when we returned from Khaybar, I passed by while he was speaking to the Prophet ﷺ but I did not greet him. Jibrīl said: Who is this? He said: Ḥārithah. He said: Had he greeted, we would have returned his greeting. Ibn Saʿd said: Al-Wāqidī said: Ḥārithah had dwellings near the dwellings of the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah, and every time the Prophet ﷺ took a new wife, he moved from one dwelling after another, until the Prophet ﷺ said: “I have felt ashamed before Ḥārithah because of how he keeps moving for us from his dwellings.” From Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān, from his father: Ḥārithah b. al-Nuʿmān had lost his sight, so he tied a thread from his prayer place to the door of his room, and placed beside him a basket containing dates and other things. Whenever a beggar asked, he would take some of those dates, then follow the thread to the door of the room and hand them to the beggar. His family would say: We can take care of that for you. He would say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “Giving to the beggar protects from an evil death.” Ḥujr b. ʿAdī And in this year: the killing of Ḥujr b. ʿAdī. He is Ḥujr b. ʿAdī b. Jabalah b. ʿAdī b. Rabīʿah b. Muʿāwiyah al-Akramīn b. al-Ḥārith b. Muʿāwiyah b. Thawr b. Murtaʿ b. Kindī al-Kūfī. He was called Ḥujr al-Khayr, and he was also called Ḥujr b. al-Adbar because his father ʿAdī was stabbed while fleeing, so he was named al-Adbar. Ḥujr was called Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and he was from Kindah, one of the leaders of the people of Kufa. Ibn ʿAsākir said: He came as a delegate to the Prophet ﷺ and heard ʿAlī, ʿAmmār, and Sharāḥīl b. Murrah — and it is said: Shuraḥbīl b. Murrah. From him narrated his mawlā Abū Laylā, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿĀbis, and Abū al-Bakhtarī al-Ṭāʾī. He campaigned in Syria in the army that conquered ʿAdhrāʾ, and he witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī as a commander. He was killed at ʿAdhrāʾ, a village near Damascus, and the mosque of his grave there is well known. Then Ibn ʿAsākir cited with his chains of transmission from Ḥujr, and mentioned a good portion of his narration from ʿAlī and others. Muḥammad b. Saʿd mentioned him in the fourth class of the Companions and mentioned his delegation, then he mentioned him in the first class of the Followers of the people of Kufa, saying: He was trustworthy and well known, and he did not narrate anything from anyone other than ʿAlī. Ibn ʿAsākir said: Rather, he did narrate from ʿAmmār and Shurāḥīl b. Murrah. Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAskarī said: Most traditionists do not affirm his companionship. He witnessed al-Qādisiyyah, conquered Marj ʿAdhrāʾ, and witnessed the Camel and Ṣiffīn. With ʿAlī were Ḥujr al-Khayr — that is, this Ḥujr b. ʿAdī — and Ḥujr al-Sharr, who is Ḥujr b. Yazīd b. Salamah b. Murrah. Al-Marzubānī said: It has been narrated that Ḥujr b. ʿAdī came as a delegate to the Messenger of God ﷺ with his brother Hāniʾ b. ʿAdī. This man was one of the most devout and ascetic of people. He was dutiful to his mother, and he prayed and fasted much. Abū Maʿshar said: He never broke wind without performing ablution, and he never performed ablution without praying two rakʿahs. More than one person said this. The reason for the killing of Ḥujr b. ʿAdī The reason for his killing: When Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān appointed al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah over Kufa, he said to him: I had intended to entrust you with many things, but I am leaving them, relying on your insight into what pleases me and strengthens my authority. Al-Mughīrah remained over Kufa as governor for Muʿāwiyah for seven years and some months, with good conduct, except that he did not cease to pray for ʿUthmān and speak ill of ʿAlī ؓ. Whenever Ḥujr b. ʿAdī heard that, he said: I testify that the one you disparage is more deserving of virtue, and the one you praise is more deserving of blame. Al-Mughīrah would say to him: Woe to you, fear the anger of the ruler and his violence. One day al-Mughīrah stood and praised ʿUthmān, and Ḥujr shouted at him: You have withheld our stipends and become obsessed with praising the criminals. More than thirty men stood with him saying: Ḥujr has spoken the truth; order our stipends to be given to us. Al-Mughīrah came down and his people entered upon him and said: Why do you leave this man to be daring against your authority? If it reaches Muʿāwiyah, he will be angry with you. Al-Mughīrah said to them: I have killed him, for a governor will come after me and think he is like me, and he will do to him something like what you see him doing to me, and he will seize him at the first opportunity and kill him with the worst killing. My appointed time has drawn near, and I do not like to initiate for the people of this city the killing of their best men, so that they become happy and I become wretched, and Muʿāwiyah becomes mighty in this world while al-Mughīrah becomes abased on the Day of Resurrection. But I will accept from their good-doers, pardon their wrongdoers, and admonish their wicked until death separates me from them. They will remember me, and if only they had tried governors after me. Then al-Mughīrah died and Ziyād became governor. He stood before the people and delivered a sermon upon his arrival, then he asked mercy for ʿUthmān, praised his companions, and cursed his killers. Ḥujr stood and did as he used to do with al-Mughīrah. Ziyād returned to Basra and appointed ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth as his deputy over Kufa. It reached him that Ḥujr was gathering the partisans of ʿAlī, and they openly cursed Muʿāwiyah and dissociated from him, and that they threw pebbles at ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth. Ziyād set out to Kufa and entered it, ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled God while Ḥujr was sitting. Then he said: To proceed: the outcome of oppression and error is evil. These people have become numerous and insolent; they have felt safe from me and have become bold against God. If you do not straighten up, I will treat you with your own medicine. I am nothing if I do not protect Kufa from Ḥujr and make him an example for those after him. Woe to your mother, O Ḥujr! The evening meal has fallen upon you with a wolf. He sent for Ḥujr, summoning him while he was in the mosque. When Ziyād's messenger came to summon him, his companions said: Do not go to him, and no honor to him. The messenger returned and informed Ziyād, so he ordered his chief of police, Shaddād b. al-Haytham al-Hilālī, to send a group to him. He did so, and Ḥujr's companions reviled them, so they returned and informed Ziyād. He gathered the people of Kufa and said: You wound with one hand and heal with the other! Your bodies are with me and your hearts are with Ḥujr the fool! This, by God, is from your treachery! By God, either your innocence becomes clear to me, or I will bring you people by whom I will straighten your crookedness and your pride! They said: God forbid that we should have any opinion other than obedience to you and what pleases you. He said: Then let every man of you stand and call away from Ḥujr those of his kinsmen and family who are with him. They did so and removed most of his companions from him. Ziyād said to his chief of police: Go to Ḥujr; if he follows you, bring him to me; otherwise, attack them with swords until you bring him to me. The chief of police came to summon him, and his companions prevented him from answering. He charged them, and Abū al-ʿAmarratah al-Kindī said to Ḥujr: There is no one with you who has a sword but me, and my sword will not avail you. Rise and join your family; your people will protect you. Ziyād was watching them from the pulpit, and Ziyād's men surrounded them. A man from al-Ḥamrāʾ struck the head of ʿAmr b. al-Ḥamiq with his club and he fell. His companions carried him to the Azd, and he hid among them until he left. Ḥujr's companions withdrew to the gates of Kindah, and one of the police struck the hand of ʿĀʾidh b. Ḥamlah al-Tamīmī and broke his tooth. He took a club from one of the police and fought with it, protecting Ḥujr and his companions until they left the gates of Kindah. Ḥujr's mule was brought to him, and Abū al-ʿAmarratah said to him: Mount, for you have killed us and yourself. He helped him mount, and Abū al-ʿAmarratah mounted his horse. Yazīd b. Ṭarīf al-Muslī caught up with him and struck Abū al-ʿAmarratah on the thigh with the club. Abū al-ʿAmarratah took his sword and struck him on the head, and he fell; then he recovered. About him ʿAbd Allāh b. Hammām al-Salūlī said: How base is the base-born son! What brought you, unhorsed, to a hero of courage and firmness, Who repeatedly strikes the armored ones with his sword Upon the heads in the fray, not ignoble, To the horseman of the two caves on the day they met At Ṣiffīn, a chief, the best offspring of chiefs! You thought the fighting of Ibn Barṣāʾ al-Ḥitār Was like your fighting Zayd on the day of Dār Ḥakīm! That sword was the first sword struck in Kufa in a dispute among the people. Ḥujr and Abū al-ʿAmarratah went to Ḥujr's house, and many people gathered to them, but not many of Kindah came to him. Ziyād, while on the pulpit, sent Madhḥij and Hamdān to the cemetery of Kindah, ordering them to bring him Ḥujr. He sent the rest of the people of Yemen to the cemetery of the hunters, ordering them to go to their companion Ḥujr and bring him to him. They did so. Madhḥij and Hamdān entered the cemetery of Kindah and seized everyone they found, and Ziyād praised them. When Ḥujr saw how few were with him, he ordered them to disperse, saying: You have no strength against those who have gathered against you, and I do not want you to perish. They left, and Madhḥij and Hamdān caught up with them and fought them. They captured Qays b. Yazīd, and the rest escaped. Ḥujr took a road to Banū Ḥūt and entered the house of a man of theirs called Sulaym b. Yazīd. The pursuers caught up with him, and Sulaym took his sword to fight, but his daughters wept. Ḥujr said: How bad it would be for me to bring this upon your daughters! He said: By God, you will not be taken from my house as a captive or a corpse while I am alive. Ḥujr went out through a small gate in his house and came to al-Nakhaʿ, where he stayed at the house of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, the brother of al-Ashtar, who received him well. While he was with him, it was said to him: The police are asking about you in al-Nakhaʿ. The reason for that was that a black slave woman met them and asked: Whom are you seeking? They said: Ḥujr b. ʿAdī. She said: He is in al-Nakhaʿ. Ḥujr left him and went to al-Azd, hiding with Rabīʿah b. Nājid. When they were unable to find him, Ziyād summoned Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath and said to him: By God, you will bring him to me, or I will cut down every palm tree of yours and demolish your houses, and then you will not escape me until I cut you limb by limb. He asked for a delay, and Ziyād granted him three days. He brought Qays b. Yazīd as a captive, and Ziyād said to him: No harm to you. I know your opinion about ʿUthmān and your service with Muʿāwiyah at Ṣiffīn, and that you fought with Ḥujr only out of tribal zeal. I have forgiven that for you, but bring me your brother ʿUmayr. Qays sought a guarantee of safety for him from Ziyād for his property and blood, and Ziyād granted it. He brought him, wounded, and Ziyād loaded him with iron and ordered men to lift him and throw him down. They did that repeatedly. Qays b. Yazīd said to Ziyād: Did you not guarantee him safety? He said: Yes, I guaranteed his blood, and I will not shed blood for him. Then he fined him and released him. Ḥujr b. ʿAdī stayed in the house of Rabīʿah for a day and a night. Then he sent to Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath to obtain for him from Ziyād a guarantee of safety until he could send him to Muʿāwiyah. Muḥammad gathered a group, including Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh, Ḥujr b. Yazīd, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, the brother of al-Ashtar. They went in to Ziyād and sought safety for him on condition that he send him to Muʿāwiyah. He granted their request, so they sent to Ḥujr b. ʿAdī, and he came before Ziyād. When he saw him, he said: “Welcome to you, Abā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. War in the days of war, and war now that the people have made peace. On its people Barāqish brings calamity.” Ḥujr said: “I have not cast off obedience, nor have I separated from the community, and I am true to my bayʿah.” So he ordered him to prison. When he turned away, Ziyād said: “By Allah, I will strive to sever the thread of his neck.” He sought his companions. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥamiq departed until he reached al-Mawṣil, accompanied by Rifāʿah b. Shaddād. They hid in a mountain there. Their news was reported to the governor of al-Mawṣil, so he marched against them. They came out to him. As for ʿAmr, his stomach had become dropsical and he had no ability to resist. As for Rifāʿah, he was a strong young man, so he mounted his horse to fight on behalf of ʿAmr. ʿAmr said to him: “Your fighting on my behalf will not benefit me. Save yourself!” So he charged at them, and they made way for him, and he escaped. ʿAmr was taken prisoner. They asked him: “Who are you?” He said: “Someone whom, if you leave alone, would be safer for you, and if you kill, would be more harmful to you.” He did not tell them. They sent him to the governor of al-Mawṣil, who was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUthmān al-Thaqafī, known as Ibn Umm al-Ḥakam, the son of Muʿāwiyah’s sister. He recognized him and wrote about him to Muʿāwiyah. Muʿāwiyah wrote back to him: “He claimed that he stabbed ʿUthmān nine stabs with iron spikes he had with him. So stab him as he stabbed ʿUthmān.” He was brought out and stabbed, and died from the first or second of them. Ziyād intensified the search for Ḥujr’s companions, so they fled, and he seized those of them he could. Qabīṣah b. Ḍubayʿah al-ʿAbsī was brought to him under a guarantee of safety, and he imprisoned him. Qays b. ʿAbbād al-Shaybānī came to Ziyād and said to him: “There is a man of ours called Ṣayfī, one of the leaders of Ḥujr’s companions.” Ziyād sent for him, and he was brought. He said: “O enemy of Allah, what do you say about Abū Turāb?” He said: “I do not know Abū Turāb.” He said: “How well you know him! Do you know ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “That is Abū Turāb.” He said: “No indeed. That is Abū al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn.” The chief of police said to him: “The amīr says he is Abū Turāb, and you say no?” He said: “If the amīr lies, should I lie too, and testify to falsehood as he has testified?” Ziyād said to him: “And this too. Bring me the staff.” It was brought. He said: “What do you say about ʿAlī?” He said: “The best of words.” He said: “Beat him.” They beat him until he clung to the ground. Then he said: “Stop. What do you say about ʿAlī?” He said: “By Allah, if you cut me with razors, I would not say about him anything other than what you have heard from me.” He said: “You will curse him or I will strike your neck!” He said: “I will not do it.” So they bound him in iron and imprisoned him. It is said: Qays b. ʿAbbād lived until he fought with Ibn al-Ashʿath in his battles. Then he entered al-Kūfah and sat in his house. Ḥawshab said to al-Ḥajjāj: “Here is a man of strife. There has been no strife in Iraq but he leapt into it. He is a Turābī who curses ʿUthmān, and he went out with Ibn al-Ashʿath until he perished, and now he has come and sits in his house.” Al-Ḥajjāj sent for him and killed him. The sons of his father said to the family of Ḥawshab: “You informed against our companion!” They said: “You too informed against our companion”—meaning Ṣayfī al-Shaybānī. Ziyād sent after ʿAbd Allāh b. Khalīfah al-Ṭāʾī, but he hid himself. He sent police after him, and they seized him. His sister al-Nawār went out and incited Ṭayyiʾ, and they rose against the police and freed him. They returned to Ziyād and told him. He seized ʿAdī b. Ḥātim while he was in the mosque and said: “Bring me ʿAbd Allāh!” He said: “What is his situation?” He told him. He said: “I have no knowledge of this.” He said: “You will certainly bring him to me.” He said: “I will never bring him to you. I bring you my cousin so that you may kill him! By Allah, if he were under my feet, I would not lift them from him.” So he ordered him to prison. There remained in al-Kūfah no Yemenī or Ribʿī but he spoke to Ziyād and said: “Would you do this to ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said: “I will release him on condition that he sends his cousin away from me, so that he does not enter al-Kūfah as long as I have authority.” They agreed to that. ʿAdī sent to ʿAbd Allāh informing him of what had happened and commanding him to join the two mountains of Ṭayyiʾ. He went out to them, and he used to write to ʿAdī asking him to intercede for him so that he might return to al-Kūfah, while ʿAdī kept giving him hope. Among what he wrote to him, reproaching him and mourning Ḥujr and his companions, is his saying: I remembered Laylā and youth in its prime, and remembering youth is a burning pain for one who remembers. Youth has turned away, and I miss its branches—what longing for it when it departed! So leave off remembering youth and its loss, and its causes now that it has left you and faded. And weep for the friends when they were cut down, and found no return from the watering-place of death. Their fates summoned them, and he whose day has come among people—know that it will not be delayed. Those were my partisans and refuge when the day was found blazing and remembered. After them I did not desire to console myself with anything of this world, nor to live long. I say—and by Allah, I shall not forget remembering them as long as nights last, or until I die and am buried— Upon the people of ʿAdhrāʾ may peace be doubled from Allah, and may the towering clouds water them. There Ḥujr met mercy from Allah, for Ḥujr had pleased Allah and had made his excuse. May pouring rain and lasting drizzle never cease upon the grave of Ḥujr, until the call is made and he is gathered. O Ḥujr, who is there now for the horses whose chests are bloodied, and for the raiding king when he tyrannizes? And who now speaks the truth after you, proclaiming piety, and who, when injustice is spoken of, changes it? Blessed brother of Islam you were, and I indeed hoped that you would be granted immortality and made joyful. You used to give the sword its due in war, and you knew what was right and rejected what was wrong. O our two brothers of Humaym, may you be protected and given ease for righteous deeds, so rejoice. O our two Khindifī brothers, rejoice in what we have; may you be greeted and not destroyed. O our brothers of Ḥaḍramawt and Ghālib and Shaybān, may you meet an easy reckoning. You were fortunate, and I have not heard of any more right than you in argument before majestic death, nor more patient. I shall weep for you as long as a star shines and the dove coos in the belly of the two valleys and warbles. And I said, and I did not wrong: O Ghawth b. Ṭayyiʾ, when did I fear that I would be made to march among you? May you be bereft! Did you not fight on behalf of your brother? He was covered over until he leaned, then fell sideways. You left me, so I was left abandoned, as if I were a stranger from Iyād and Aʿṣur. Who among you is like me at every raid, and who among you is like me when hardship appears? Who among you is like me when war bares its teeth and the death-seeker hastens in it and girds himself? Here I am, sheltering in the mountains of Ṭayyiʾ, an exile. Had Allah willed, He would have changed it. My enemy banished me unjustly from my place of emigration. I am content with what Allah willed and decreed. My people surrendered me without any crime, as if they had never been my tribe and kinsfolk. If I find a home in the mountains of Ṭayyiʾ, and had help from ʿUṣayr and Maḥḍar, then I did not fear to be seen as a stranger. May Allah curse the one who blamed me for it and exaggerated. May Allah curse Qayl of the Ḥaḍramīs and Wāʾil, and may al-Qanānī meet the appointed spearhead. And may destruction meet the people who banded together against us and spoke words of falsehood and evil. Let not a people of Ghawth b. Ṭayyiʾ leave me alone; if their time becomes hard upon them and changes, I did not raid them at the two markers, nor did I raise against them a dust cloud at al-Kuwayfah, darkening. So convey to my friend, if you travel eastward, to Jadīlah and the two clans of Maʿn and Buḥtur, and Nabhān and the groups of the root of Ṭayyiʾ: Was I not among you one of great usefulness and strength? Do you not remember on the day of al-ʿUdhayb my oath before you that I would never be seen turning my back as long as I lived? And my charge at Mihrān when the army was blocked, and my killing of the brave chief who sought death, the one adorned with bracelets? And on the day of Jalūlāʾ of the battle, I was not blamed, and on the day of Nahāwand of the conquests and Tustar. And you forget me on the day of al-Sharīʿah and the spears at Ṣiffīn, broken upon their shoulders. May his Lord reward ʿAdī b. Ḥātim on my behalf for abandoning me and forsaking me with an ample reward. Do you forget, heedless one, O son of Ḥātim, my trials on the evening when your ʿAdī availed nothing, though it was numerous? I defended you against the people until they betrayed one another, and I was the fiercest and most formidable adversary. They turned away and did not take my place, as if they saw me as a lion lurking in the thicket. I helped you when the near one betrayed and the far one broke away, and I stood alone in strong support. So my reward was to be dragged among you, pulled along, and to be given humiliation and taken prisoner. How many promises did I have from you that you would restore me, but the promise availed me nothing, not even a worthless thing. So I have become tending camels, sometimes, and at other times I mutter as the shepherd of little sheep mutters. As if I had never ridden a swift horse on a raid, nor left the armored champion fallen on his side. Nor had I met with the sword a raiding party of yours when the coward walked backward, then dragged himself. Nor had I urged on the gallop in pursuit of a band heading for upper Sijās and Abhar. Nor had I startled the villages with a raid like the coming of sandgrouse to water, then descended victorious. I have not seen horses that fight with spears like them at Qazwīn, or Sharwīn, or in the raid on Kaydar. That is a time whose praiseworthiness has gone from me, and its kindness has turned away from me. May my people not perish, though I blame them, for I was the one doubled in effort among them and the one denied gratitude. There is no good in the world, nor in life after them, though I am far in abode from them, confined. The action of ʿAbd Allāh with ʿAdī at the battle of Ṣiffīn has already been mentioned, so we do not mention it here. ʿAbd Allāh died at the two mountains before the death of Ziyād. Then Karīm b. ʿAfīf al-Khathʿamī, one of the companions of Ḥujr b. ʿAdī, was brought to Ziyād. He said: “What is your name?” He said: “Karīm b. ʿAfīf.” He said: “How good your name and your father’s name, and how evil your deed and your opinion!” He said to him: “By Allah, your acquaintance with my opinion is recent.” He said: And Ziyād gathered twelve men of the companions of ʿAdī in prison. Then he summoned the chiefs of the four quarters at that time: ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth over the quarter of the people of al-Madīnah; Khālid b. ʿUrfuṭah over the quarter of Tamīm and Hamdān; Qays b. al-Walīd over the quarter of Rabīʿah and Kindah; and Abū Burdah b. Abī Mūsā over the quarter of Madhḥij and Asad. These testified that Ḥujr gathered the crowds to himself, openly reviled the caliph, called for war against the Commander of the Faithful, claimed that this matter is only fitting for the family of Abū Ṭālib, rose up in the garrison town, expelled the governor of the Commander of the Faithful, and openly defended Abū Turāb, asked mercy for him, and declared his innocence from his enemy and the people who fought him. And that these individuals who were with him are the leaders of his companions, upon the same opinion and matter as his. Ziyād examined the testimony of the witnesses and said: “I would like them to be more than four.” So he called the people to testify against him. Isḥāq and Mūsā, the two sons of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, testified, as did al-Mundhir b. al-Zubayr, ʿUmārah b. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ, ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, and others. Among the witnesses were recorded Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith the judge and Shurayḥ b. Hāniʾ. As for Shurayḥ b. Hāniʾ, he used to say: “I did not testify, and I blamed him for it.” Then Ziyād handed over Ḥujr b. ʿAdī and his companions to Wāʾil b. Ḥujr al-Ḥaḍramī and Kathīr b. Shihāb, and ordered them to travel with them to Syria. They departed in the evening. When they reached al-Ghariyyayn, Shurayḥ b. Hāniʾ caught up with them and gave Wāʾil a letter and said: “Deliver it to the Commander of the Faithful.” He took it, and they traveled until they brought them to Marj ʿAdhrāʾ near Damascus. They were: Ḥujr b. ʿAdī al-Kindī, al-Arqam b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kindī, Sharīk b. Shaddād al-Ḥaḍramī, Ṣayfī b. Fasīl al-Shaybānī, Qabīṣah b. Ḍubayʿah al-ʿAbsī, Karīm b. ʿAfīf al-Khathʿamī, ʿĀṣim b. ʿAwf al-Bajalī, Warqāʾ b. Sumayʿ al-Bajalī, Kidām b. Ḥayyān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān al-ʿAnaziyyīn, Muḥriz b. Shihāb al-Tamīmī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥawiyyah al-Saʿdī al-Tamīmī—these are twelve men. Ziyād added to them two men: ʿUtbah b. al-Akhnas of Saʿd b. Bakr, and Saʿd b. Nimrān al-Hamdānī. So they became fourteen men. Muʿāwiyah sent for Wāʾil b. Ḥujr and Kathīr b. Shihāb and admitted them. He took their letter and read it. Wāʾil handed him the letter of Shurayḥ b. Hāniʾ, and in it was: “It has reached me that Ziyād wrote down my testimony. My testimony concerning Ḥujr is that he is one of those who establish prayer, give zakāh, persist in Hajj and ʿUmrah, command what is right and forbid what is wrong. His blood and property are inviolable. If you wish, kill him, and if you wish, leave him.” Muʿāwiyah said: “I see that this man has excluded himself from your testimony.” And he detained the people at Marj ʿAdhrāʾ. The two men whom Ziyād had added to Ḥujr and his companions reached them. When they arrived, ʿĀmir b. al-Aswad al-ʿIjlī went to Muʿāwiyah to inform him about them. Ḥujr b. ʿAdī stood up in his fetters and said to him: “Tell Muʿāwiyah that our blood is forbidden to him. Tell him that we were given safety and we made peace with him and he with us, and that we did not kill anyone of the people of the qiblah so that our blood would be lawful to him.” ʿĀmir entered upon Muʿāwiyah and told him about the two men. Yazīd b. Asad al-Bajalī stood up and asked him to grant him his two cousins, ʿĀṣim and Warqāʾ. Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī had written about them, declaring them upright and testifying to their innocence of what had been testified against them. Muʿāwiyah released them. Wāʾil b. Ḥujr interceded for al-Arqam, and he left him to him. Abū al-Aʿwar al-Sulamī interceded for ʿUtbah b. al-Akhnas, and he left him. Ḥumrah b. Mālik al-Hamdānī interceded for Saʿd b. Nimrān, and he granted him to him. (Ḥabīb b. Maslamah interceded for Ibn Ḥawiyyah, and he left him to him.) Mālik b. Hubayrah al-Sakūnī stood up and said: “Leave for me my cousin Ḥujr.” He said to him: “He is the head of the people, and I fear that if I release him he will corrupt his garrison town for me, and we would need to send you to Iraq in his place.” He said: “By Allah, you have not dealt fairly with me, O Muʿāwiyah! I fought with you against your cousin on the day of Ṣiffīn until you prevailed, and your heel rose high, and you did not fear the turns of fate. Then I asked you for my cousin, and you refused me!” Then he turned away and sat in his house. So Muʿāwiyah sent Hudbah b. Fayyāḍ al-Quḍāʿī, al-Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kilābī, and Abū Sharīf al-Baddī to Ḥujr and his companions to kill those of them whom they were ordered to kill. They came to them at evening: When al-Khathʿamī saw one of them was one-eyed, he said: "He will kill half of us and leave half of us." So they left six and killed eight. They said to them before the killing: "We have been ordered to offer you disavowal of ʿAlī and cursing him. If you do so, we will leave you, and if you refuse, we will kill you": They said: "We will not do that." So he ordered, and graves were dug and shrouds were brought. Ḥujr and his companions stood praying most of the night: When it was the next morning, they brought them forward to kill them. Ḥujr b. ʿAdī said to them: "Leave me to perform ablution and pray, for I have never performed ablution except that I prayed." So they left him, and he prayed. Then he finished and said: "By God, I have never prayed a prayer lighter than it. Were it not that you would think I was fearful of death, I would have prayed more": Then he said: "O God, we seek Your help against our community! For the people of Kufa testified against us, and the people of Syria are killing us. By God, if you kill me here, I am the first horseman of the Muslims to perish in its valley, and the first man of the Muslims whose dogs barked at him!" Then Hudbah b. Fayyāḍ walked to him with the sword and trembled. They said to him: "You claimed that you do not fear death, so disavow your companion and we will leave you": He said: "And why should I not fear when I see a dug grave, a spread shroud, and a drawn sword! By God, even if I fear being killed, I will not say what angers the Lord." So they killed him and killed six. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān al-ʿAnazī and Karīm al-Khathʿamī said: "Send us to the Commander of the Faithful, for we will say about this man the like of what he said": They sought permission from Muʿāwiyah regarding the two, and he permitted bringing them: When they entered upon him, al-Khathʿamī said: "God, God, O Muʿāwiyah! For you will be moved from this transient abode to the everlasting abode of the Hereafter, and then you will be asked about what you intended by shedding our blood!" He said to him: "What do you say about ʿAlī?" He said: "I say about him what you say." He said: "Do you disavow the religion of ʿAlī by which he worshipped God?" So he was silent. Then Shamir b. ʿAbd Allāh from Banū Quḥāfah (b. Khathʿam) stood up and asked for him as a gift, and he gave him to him on condition that he not enter Kufa. He chose Mosul, and he used to say: "If Muʿāwiyah died, I would come to Kufa." He died one month before Muʿāwiyah: Then he said to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān: "O brother of Rabīʿah, what do you say about ʿAlī?" He said: "Leave me and do not ask me, for it is better for you": He said: "By God, I will not leave you": He said: "I testify that he was among those who remembered God Almighty much, among those who enjoined truth and stood for justice and pardoned people": He said: "What do you say about ʿUthmān?" He said: "He was the first to open the doors of oppression and close the doors of truth": He said: "You have killed yourself!" He said: "Rather, I have killed you, and no Rabīʿah is in the valley," meaning to intercede for him. So Muʿāwiyah sent him back to Ziyād and ordered him to kill him with the worst killing, so he buried him alive. Those who were killed were: Ḥujr b. ʿAdī, Sharīk b. Shaddād al-Ḥaḍramī, Ṣayfī b. Fasīl al-Shaybānī, Qabīṣah b. Ḍubayʿah al-ʿAbsī, Muḥriz b. Shihāb al-Saʿdī al-Tamīmī, Kidām b. Ḥayyān al-ʿAnazī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān al-ʿAnazī whom Ziyād buried alive. These seven were killed and buried and prayed over. It was said: When the killing of Ḥujr and his companions reached al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, he said: "Did they pray over them, shroud them, bury them, and face them toward the qiblah?" They said: "Yes." He said: "They performed pilgrimage for them, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!" As for Mālik b. Hubayrah al-Sakūnī, when Muʿāwiyah did not grant his intercession for Ḥujr, he gathered his people and marched with them to ʿAdhrāʾ to rescue Ḥujr and his companions. Their killers met him. When they saw him, they knew that he had come to rescue Ḥujr. He said to them: "What is behind you?" They said: "The people repented, and we came to inform the Commander of the Faithful": He fell silent and went to ʿAdhrāʾ. Some of those who came from there met him and informed him of the killing of the people. He sent horsemen in pursuit of their killers but did not catch them. They entered upon Muʿāwiyah and informed him. He said to them: "It is only a heat he feels in himself, and it is as if it has been extinguished." Mālik returned to his house and did not come to Muʿāwiyah. When night came, Muʿāwiyah sent him one hundred thousand dirhams and said: "Nothing prevented me from granting your intercession except fear that they would renew war for us, and in that there would be upon the Muslims affliction greater than the killing of Ḥujr." So he took it and his soul was pleased. When the news of Ḥujr reached ʿĀʾishah, she sent ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith to Muʿāwiyah regarding him and his companions. He arrived after he had killed them. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to him: "Where was the forbearance of Abū Sufyān absent from you?" He said: "When the like of you among the forbearing of my people was absent from me, and Ibn Sumayyah carried me and I bore it." ʿĀʾishah said: "Were it not that we never change anything except that matters turn to what is more severe, the killing of Ḥujr would have made us change. By God, as far as I knew, he was a Muslim, a performer of Hajj and ʿUmrah." Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: "Four traits were in Muʿāwiyah; had there been in him only one, it would have been destructive: his seizing this community by the sword until he took the matter without consultation, while among them were remnants of the Companions and people of virtue; his appointing after him his son, a wine-bibber and drunkard, who wore silk and played lutes; his claiming Ziyād, while the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The child belongs to the bed, and the fornicator gets the stone'; and his killing Ḥujr and the companions of Ḥujr. Woe to him from Ḥujr! Woe to him from Ḥujr and the companions of Ḥujr!" It was said: The people used to say: "The first humiliation that entered Kufa was the death of al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, the killing of Ḥujr, and the claim of Ziyād." Hind bt. Zayd al-Anṣāriyyah, who was a Shīʿī, said elegizing Ḥujr: Rise, O shining moon, look and see if you can see Ḥujr walking, walking to Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥarb so that he may kill him as the commander claimed. The tyrants became arrogant after Ḥujr, and al-Khawarnaq and al-Sadīr became pleasant for them. The lands became barren for him, as if no rain-bearing cloud had revived them. O Ḥujr, Ḥujr of Banū ʿAdī, may safety and joy meet you. I fear for you what destroyed ʿAdī, and an old man in Damascus who has a roar. If you perish, then every leader of a people from this world goes to destruction. There has been said about his killing something other than what preceded: that Ziyād gave a sermon on a Friday and prolonged the sermon and delayed the prayer. Ḥujr b. ʿAdī said to him: "The prayer." He continued in his sermon. He said to him: "The prayer": He continued in his sermon. When Ḥujr b. ʿAdī feared missing the prayer, he struck his hand to a handful of pebbles and stood for prayer, and the people stood with him: When Ziyād saw that, he came down and prayed with the people. He wrote to Muʿāwiyah and exaggerated against him. Muʿāwiyah wrote to him to bind him in iron and send him to him. When he wanted to seize him, his people stood to prevent him. Ḥujr said: "No, but hearing and obedience": So he was bound in iron and carried to Muʿāwiyah: When he entered upon him, he said: "Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful!" Muʿāwiyah said: "Am I the Commander of the Faithful? By God, I will not pardon you nor ask pardon! Take him out and strike his neck!" Ḥujr said to those in charge of his affair: "Leave me until I pray two rakʿahs": They said: "Pray." So he prayed two rakʿahs, making them light, then said: "Were it not that you would think of me other than what I intended, I would have prolonged them." He said to those of his people who were present: "Do not release iron from me nor wash blood from me, for I will meet Muʿāwiyah tomorrow on the road." His neck was struck: He said: ʿĀʾishah met Muʿāwiyah and said to him: "Where was your forbearance regarding Ḥujr?" He said: "No rightly guided person was present with me": Ibn Sīrīn said: It reached us that when death attended Muʿāwiyah, he kept saying: "My day from you, O Ḥujr, is long!" Saʿīd b. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl: He accepted Islam before the Messenger of God ﷺ entered the house of al-Arqam and before he called people in it. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him with Ṭalḥah to spy on the news of the caravan, and they missed Badr. The Messenger of God ﷺ allotted their shares and rewards. They arrived in Madinah on the day the Messenger of God ﷺ met the polytheists at Badr. Saʿīd witnessed Uḥud, the Trench, and the battles after them with the Messenger of God ﷺ. He died at al-ʿAqīq in this year. Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ washed him, and he was carried to Madinah and buried there. He was a man of some seventy-odd years, tall, dark-skinned, and hairy. ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays b. Asʿad b. Ḥarām, Abū Yaḥyā: He witnessed the ʿAqabah with the seventy. He and Muʿādh b. Jabal used to break the idols of Banū Salamah when they accepted Islam. He did not witness Badr, but he witnessed Uḥud and what came after. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him alone in a detachment to Sufyān b. Khālid b. Nubayḥ al-Hudhalī and ordered him to kill him. He went out and killed him, then returned and informed the Prophet ﷺ. He gave him a short staff, meaning a stick, and said: "Take this; you will lean on it on the Day of Resurrection, for those who lean on staffs that day will be few." When death attended him, he ordered that it be buried with him in his shrouds. He died in Madinah during the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah. Nufayʿ b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Bakrah: It is said his name was Masrūḥ, and it is said Nufayʿ b. Masrūḥ. His mother was Sumayyah, and he was the maternal brother of Ziyād b. Sumayyah, who was claimed by Abū Sufyān. He was a slave of some of the people of al-Ṭāʾif. When the Messenger of God ﷺ besieged them, his caller announced: "Any slave who descends from the fort and comes out to us is free." So more than ten of them came out, including Abū Bakrah. He let himself down by a pulley, so he was given the kunyah Abū Bakrah. He used to say: "I am a client of the Messenger of God ﷺ." He settled in Basra and narrated from the Messenger of God ﷺ. From ʿUyaynah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: My father told me, he said: When Abū Bakrah complained of illness, his sons offered to bring him a physician, but he refused. When death descended upon him and he recognized death in himself and they recognized it in him, he said: "Where is your physician to repel it if he is truthful?" They said: "What use is it now?" He said: "And before now." He said: His daughter Amat Allāh came. When she saw what was with him, she wept. He said: "O my little daughter, do not weep." She said: "O father, if I do not weep for you, for whom shall I weep?" He said: "Do not weep, for by Him in whose hand is my soul, there is no soul on earth whose departure I would prefer to my own, not even the soul of this flying fly." He turned to Ḥumrān b. Abān, who was at his head, and said: "I will not tell you why. I feared, by God, that something would happen that would come between me and Islam." Then Anas b. Mālik came and sat before him. He took his hand and said: "The son of your mother, Ziyād, sent me to you to convey greetings of peace. He has learned what has befallen you of God Almighty's decree, and he loved to renew a covenant with you, greet you, and part from you with satisfaction." He said: "Will you convey from me?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I adjure him not to enter a house for me or attend a funeral for me." He said: "Why, may God have mercy on you, when he honored you and maintained ties with your sons?" He said: "For that I am angry with him." He said: "In your own private affair. I only knew him to be diligent." He said: "Sit me up." So they sat him up. He said: "I adjure you by God, tell me about the people of the Nahrawān, were they diligent?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Did they hit the mark or err?" He said: "That is it." Then he said: "Lay me down." Anas returned to Ziyād and informed him. He rode heading toward Kufa, but he died. His sons brought Abū Barzah forward, and he prayed over him. In this year died the Mother of the Believers Maymūnah bt. al-Ḥārith al-Hilāliyyah. The Messenger of God ﷺ married her in the ʿUmrah of the Qaḍāʾ in the year seven. Ibn ʿAbbās, who was the son of her sister Umm al-Faḍl Lubābah bt. al-Ḥārith, said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ married her while he was in iḥrām." Both transmitted it. It is established in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from her that they were both in a state of non-iḥrām. Her statement takes precedence according to most scholars over the statement of Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Tirmidhī narrated from Abū Rāfiʿ, who was the intermediary between them, that they were both in a state of non-iḥrām. It is said her name was Barrah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ named her Maymūnah. She died at Sarif, between Makkah and Madinah, where the Messenger of God ﷺ consummated the marriage with her, in this year. It was said: in the year sixty-three. It was said: the year sixty-six. The first is the well-known opinion. Her nephew ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās ؓ prayed over her.
