The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
ذِكْرُ اسْتِعْمَالِ الرَّبِيعِ عَلَى خُرَاسَانَ وَفِي سنة إحدى وخمسين وَجَّهَ زِيَادٌ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ زِيَادٍ الْحَارِثِيَّ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ أَمِيرًا بَعْدَ مَوْتِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيِّ وَكَانَ الْحَكَمُ قَدِ اسْتَخْلَفَ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ أَنَسَ بْنَ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ فَعَزَلَهُ زِيَادٌ وَوَلَّى خُلَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَنَفِيَّ أَشْهُرًا ثُمَّ عَزَلَهُ، وَوَلَّى خُرَاسَانَ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ زِيَادٍ فِي أَوَّلِ سَنَةِ إِحْدَى وَخَمْسِينَ فَنَقَلَ النَّاسُ عِيَالَاتِهِمْ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ فَوَطَنُوهَا، ثُمَّ غَزَا الرَّبِيعُ حِينَ قَدِمَ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ فَفَتَحَ بَلْخَ صُلْحًا، وَفَتَحَ قَهَسْتَانَ عَنْوَةً، وَكَانَتْ بِنَاحِيَتِهِمْ أَتْرَاكٌ فَقَتَلَهُمْ وَهَزَمَهُمْ، وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ بَقِيَ مِنْهُمْ نَيْزَكُ طَرْخَانُ فَقَتَلَهُ قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ فِي وِلَايَتِهِ. وَكَانَ الرَّبِيعُ قَدْ قَطَعَ النَّهْرَ فَغَنِمَ وَسَلِمَ، وَكَانَ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو قَطَعَ النَّهْرَ قَبْلَهُ فِي وِلَايَتِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَفْتَحْ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the appointment of al-Rabīʿ over Khurāsān In the year fifty-one, Ziyād appointed al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-Ḥārithī as governor over Khurāsān after the death of al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī. Al-Ḥakam had appointed Anas b. Abī Iyās as his successor over his province, but Ziyād dismissed him and appointed Khulayd b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥanafī for some months, then dismissed him and appointed al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād over Khurāsān at the beginning of the year fifty-one. The people then moved their families to Khurāsān and settled there. Then al-Rabīʿ raided when he arrived in Khurāsān and conquered Balkh by treaty, and conquered Qahastān by force. There were Turks in their vicinity, and he killed them and routed them. Among those who remained of them was Nīzak Ṭarkhān, whom Qutaybah b. Muslim killed during his governorship. Al-Rabīʿ had crossed the river, gaining booty and emerging safely. Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr had crossed the river before him during his governorship, except that he did not conquer.
