The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
خُرُوجِ قُرَيْبٍ وَفِيهَا خَرَجَ قُرَيْبٌ الْأَزْدِيُّ وَزَحَّافٌ الطَّائِيُّ بِالْبَصْرَةِ، وَهُمَا ابْنَا خَالَةٍ، وَزِيَادٌ بِالْكُوفَةِ وَسَمُرَةُ عَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ، فَأَتَيَا بَنِي ضُبَيْعَةَ، وَهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا، وَقَتَلُوا مِنْهُمْ شَيْخًا، وَخَرَجَ عَلَى قُرَيْبٍ وَزَحَّافٍ شَبَابٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَلِيٍّ وَبَنِي رَاسِبٍ فَرَمَوْهُمْ بِالنَّبْلِ، وَقَتَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَوْسٍ الطَّاحِيُّ قُرَيْبًا وَجَاءَ بِرَأْسِهِ: وَاشْتَدَّ زِيَادٌ فِي أَمْرِ الْخَوَارِجِ فَقَتَلَهُمْ، وَأَمَرَ سَمُرَةَ بِذَلِكَ فَقَتَلَ مِنْهُمْ بَشَرًا كَثِيرًا: وَخَطَبَ زِيَادٌ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَهْلَ الْبَصْرَةِ وَاللَّهِ لَتَكُفُّنَّنِي هَؤُلَاءِ أَوْ لَأَبْدَأَنَّ بِكُمْ ! وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ أَفْلَتَ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلٌ لَا تَأْخُذُونَ الْعَامَ مِنْ عَطَائِكُمْ دِرْهَمًا ! فَثَارَ النَّاسُ بِهِمْ فَقَتَلُوهُمْ.
Translation
✧ The uprising of Qurayb. In this year Qurayb al-Azdī and Zaḥḥāf al-Ṭāʾī rose in al-Baṣrah. They were maternal cousins. Ziyād was in al-Kūfah and Samurah was over al-Baṣrah. They came to Banū Ḍubayʿah, who were seventy men, and killed an old man among them. Some youths from Banū ʿAlī and Banū Rāsib went out against Qurayb and Zaḥḥāf and shot them with arrows. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aws al-Ṭāḥī killed Qurayb and brought his head: Ziyād intensified his measures against the Khawārij and killed them. He ordered Samurah to do likewise, and he killed a great many of them: Ziyād delivered a sermon from the pulpit and said: “O people of al-Baṣrah, by Allah, either you restrain these people from me, or I shall begin with you! By Allah, if a single man of them escapes and you do not seize him, you will not receive a dirham of your stipends this year!” So the people rose against them and killed them.
