The caliphate of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib
Translation
✧ Section (What took place between ʿAlī and his companions after they finished fighting the Kharijites) Al-Haytham b. ʿAdī said in his book which he compiled on the Kharijites, and it is among the best that has been written on that subject, he said: ʿĪsā b. Dāb mentioned, saying: When ʿAlī, ؓ, returned from al-Nahrawān, he stood as a speaker before the people, and said after praising God and extolling Him and invoking blessing upon the Messenger of God, ﷺ: Now then, God has honored your victory, so turn from this moment of yours toward your enemy, the people of Syria. They rose up to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, our arrows are spent, our swords are blunted, and our spearheads are worn down. Return with us to our garrison so that we may equip ourselves with the best of our gear, and perhaps the Commander of the Faithful will increase our numbers by the number of those who have left us and perished among us; for that will make us stronger against our enemy—and the one who spoke this was al-Ashʿath b. Qays al-Kindī—so he accepted their pledge of allegiance and returned with the people until he camped at al-Nukhaylah, and commanded them to keep to their camp, to devote themselves to fighting their enemy, and to reduce their visits to their women and children. They stayed with him for days adhering to his view and his word, then they slipped away until none of them remained with him except the leading men of his companions. ʿAlī then stood before them as a speaker and said: Praise be to God, the Originator of creation, the Splitter of the dawn, the Resurrector of the dead, and the Raiser of those in the graves. I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger. I enjoin you to fear God, for the best means by which a servant draws near is faith, struggle in His path, and the word of sincerity; for that is the innate nature, and the establishment of prayer; for it is the religion, and the giving of alms; for it is among His obligatory duties, and the fast of the month of Ramaḍān; for it is a shield from His punishment, and the pilgrimage to the House; for it is a repeller of poverty and an expeller of sin, and the maintaining of kinship ties; for it increases wealth, delays the appointed term, and creates love among family, and secret charity; for it atones for sin and extinguishes the anger of the Lord, and the doing of good; for it wards off an evil death and protects from the places of terror. Abound in the remembrance of God; for it is the best remembrance, and desire what God has promised the God-fearing; for God's promise is the truest promise, and follow the guidance of your Prophet, ﷺ, for it is the best guidance, and act according to his Sunnah; for it is the best of Sunnahs, and learn the Book of God; for it is the best discourse, and gain understanding in religion; for it is the spring of hearts, and seek healing through its light; for it is a cure for what is in the breasts, and recite it well; for it is the best narrative, and when it is recited to you, listen to it and be silent that you may receive mercy, and when you are guided to its knowledge, act according to what you know from it that you may be rightly guided; for the scholar who acts without knowledge is like the ignorant bewildered one who cannot go straight because of his ignorance. Rather, I have seen that the proof is greater and the regret more lasting for this scholar who has stripped himself of his knowledge, and his harm upon this ignorant one bewildered in his ignorance, and both of them are bewildered, led astray, and ruined. Do not waver lest you doubt, and do not doubt lest you disbelieve, and do not grant yourselves license lest you become heedless, and do not become heedless of the truth lest you lose. Verily, part of prudence is to trust, and part of trust is not to be deceived. The most sincere of you to himself is the most obedient of you to his Lord, and the most treacherous of you to himself is the most disobedient of you to his Lord. Whoever obeys God is safe and rejoices, and whoever disobeys God fears and regrets. Ask God for certainty, and desire from Him well-being, for the best thing that remains in the heart is certainty. The firmest of matters are their best, and their innovations are their worst. Every innovation is a heresy, and every innovator is a heretic, and whoever innovates has caused loss. No innovator introduces a heresy except that he abandons thereby a Sunnah. The defrauded is he who cheats his religion, and the tempted is he who loses his own soul. Indeed, showing off is part of polytheism, and sincerity is from action and faith. Gatherings of amusement cause the Qurʾān to be forgotten, and Satan attends them, and they call to every error. Conversation with women causes hearts to deviate and eyes to gaze at them, and they are the snares of Satan. Be truthful to God; for God is with those who are truthful, and avoid lying; for lying is apart from faith. Verily, the truthful one is upon the brink of deliverance and honor, and the liar is upon the brink of destruction and ruin and humiliation. Verily, speak the truth and you will be known by it, and act upon it and you will be among its people. Render trusts to those who entrusted you, maintain the kinship of those who cut you off, and return generously to those who deprived you, and when you make a covenant, fulfill it, and when you judge, be just. Do not boast of ancestors, do not revile one another with nicknames, do not jest, and let none of you backbite another. Help the weak, the oppressed, the debtors, and those in the path of God, the wayfarer, the beggars, and the freeing of slaves. Show mercy to the widow and the orphan, spread greetings of peace, and return the greeting to its people with the like of it or with something better. Cooperate in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression, and fear God; indeed, God is severe in punishment [al-Māʾidah: 2]. Honor the guest, be good to the neighbor, visit the sick, follow funerals, and be servants of God as brothers. Now then, the world has turned its back and announced its farewell, and the Hereafter has drawn near and looked forth with rising. The training ground is today, and tomorrow is the race. The prize and the goal are Paradise and the Fire. Verily, you are in days of respite, behind which is a swift, hasty appointed term. Whoever makes his work sincere for God in the days of his respite before his term arrives has done well in his work and attained his hope, and whoever falls short of that has lost his work and failed in his hope, and his hope has harmed him. Verily, work in desire and fear. If desire befalls you, thank God and join with it fear, and if fear befalls you, remember God and join with it desire; for God has promised the Muslims the best, and to the thankful He has promised increase. I have not seen the like of Paradise whose seeker sleeps, nor the like of the Fire whose fleer sleeps, nor anyone shrewder than an earner who earns something today and stores it for a day when stores will be of benefit and secrets will be tested, and the believer and the disbeliever will be gathered. Verily, he whom the truth does not benefit, falsehood harms him, and he who does not remain upright upon guidance, error drags him away, and he whom certainty does not benefit, doubt harms him, and he whose present does not benefit him, then his highest part is more elusive to him and his absent part is more incapable for him. Verily, you have been commanded to depart and shown the provision, so act according to what is intended. Verily, the two things I fear most for you are: long hope and following desire. Long hope makes one forget the Hereafter, and following desire turns one away from the truth. Verily, the world has journeyed away turning its back, and the Hereafter has journeyed forward approaching, and each has children. Be of the children of the Hereafter if you are able, and do not be of the children of the world; for today is action and no reckoning, and tomorrow is reckoning and no action. This is a great, eloquent, beneficial sermon, comprehensive of good and prohibitive of evil. It has corroborating transmissions from other connected sources, and praise and grace belong to God. Ibn Jarīr mentioned that when the people of Iraq refused to go with him to Syria, ʿAlī, ؓ, addressed them, reproached them, rebuked them, threatened them, and warned them, and recited to them verses of the Qurʾān concerning jihād from various sūrahs, and urged them to march against their enemy, but they refused that, opposed him, and did not agree with him, and they remained in their lands and turned away from him here. It is said: That was because of his killing the Kharijites; for they were their relatives and brothers, and they considered them the best and most virtuous of them because of their worship and their recitation, so they became sluggish toward him and abandoned him. ʿAlī entered al-Kūfah in a state of which God is All-Knowing.
