Translation

✧ [Mention of some of his poetry ؓ It was narrated from al-Shaʿbī that he said: (Abū Bakr used to recite poetry, ʿUmar used to recite poetry, and ʿAlī was the most poetical of the three): It was narrated from Nubayṭ al-Ashjaʿī that he said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ said: When hearts are wrapped in despair and the wide chest is constricted by what it holds, and hardships settle and take root, and calamities anchor in their places, and no way to remove the harm is seen, nor does the clever one avail with his stratagem, there comes to you, despite your despondency, a relief brought by the Near One, the Responsive. And every calamity, when it reaches its utmost, is connected to a near relief. It was narrated from al-Shaʿbī that he said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ said to a man, disliking for him the company of another man: Do not keep company with the brother of ignorance, beware of him and of him. For how many an ignorant one has destroyed a forbearing man when he befriended him. A man is measured by the man when he walks with him. And for a thing from a thing there are measures and likenesses. And for the heart upon the heart there is a guide when it meets it. It was narrated from al-Mubarrad that he said: It was written on the sword of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ: People have eagerness for the world with deliberation, yet its clear portion for you is mixed with turbidity. They were not granted it by reason after it was apportioned, but they were granted it by decrees. How many a refined, intelligent one does it not assist, and a fool who attained his world through shortcoming. If it were by strength or by overcoming, the falcons would fly away with the provisions of the sparrows. It was narrated from Ḥamzah b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt that he said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib used to say: Do not disclose your secret except to yourself, for every sincere adviser has an adviser. For I have seen the misguided ones of men who do not leave a sound hide intact.
