Translation
✧ Section on mentioning something of his sermons. Al-Wāqidī said: Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī narrated to me, from his father, that when ʿUthmān was given the oath of allegiance, he went out to the people and addressed them. He praised God and lauded Him, then said: O people, the first of every mount is difficult, and after today there will be days. If I live, the sermon will come to you in its proper form. We were not orators, and God will teach us. Al-Ḥasan said: ʿUthmān delivered a sermon, praised God and lauded Him, then said: O people, fear God, for fear of God is a gain. The most prudent of people is he who calls himself to account and works for what is after death, and acquires from the light of God a light for the darkness of the grave. Let a servant fear that God may raise him blind though he had been seeing. The wise man's concise speech may suffice me, while the deaf is called from a distant place. Know that whoever has God with him fears nothing, and whoever has God against him, who can he hope for after Him? Mujāhid said: ʿUthmān delivered a sermon and said: Son of Adam, know that the angel of death who is entrusted with you has not ceased to pass you by and step over to others since you have been in this world, and it is as though he has stepped over others to you and aimed at you. So take your caution and prepare for him, and do not be heedless, for he is not heedless of you. Know, son of Adam, that if you are heedless of yourself and do not prepare for it, no one else will prepare for it, and meeting God is inevitable. So take for yourself and do not entrust it to another. And peace. Sayf b. ʿUmar said, from Badr b. ʿUthmān, from his uncle, who said: The last sermon ʿUthmān delivered in a congregation was: God gave you this world only so that you might seek the Hereafter by it, and He did not give it to you so that you might incline to it. The world perishes, and the Hereafter endures. Let not the perishable one make you insolent, and let it not distract you from the enduring one. Prefer what remains over what perishes, for the world is cut off, and the return is to God. Fear God, for fear of Him is a shield from His might and a means of nearness to Him. Beware of God's changes, and adhere to your community; do not become factions. Remember God's favor upon you when you were enemies and He joined your hearts together, so that by His grace you became brothers — to the end of the two verses [Āl ʿImrān: 103, 104].
