The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
ذِكْرُ مَنْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ وَعُثْمَانُ مَحْصُورٌ اخْتَلَفَ النَّاسُ فِي ذَلِكَ، فَرَوَى الْوَاقِدِيُّ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنَ رُومَانَ: أَنَّهُ لَمَّا حُصِرَ عُثْمَانُ جَاءَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ. سَعْدُ الْقُرَظِ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ؟ فَقَالَ: نَادِ خَالِدَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ. قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ حَزْمٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَأَذَّنَ بِالصَّلَاةِ، فَقَالَ: لَا انْزِلْ، اذْهَبْ إِلَى مَنْ يُصَلِّي، فَجَاءَ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَأَمَرَ سَهَلَ بْنَ حَنِيفٍ فَصَلَّى الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي حُصِرَ فِيهِ الْحَصْرَ الْأَخِيرَ، وَهُوَ لَيْلَةً رَأَى هِلَالَ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْعِيدِ صَلَّى عَلِيٌّ الْعِيدَ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمْ حَتَّى قُتِلَ.
Translation
✧ Mention of who used to lead the people in prayer while ʿUthmān was besieged People differed about that. Al-Wāqidī related, from Rabīʿah b. ʿUthmān, from Yazīd b. Rūmān: When ʿUthmān was besieged, the muezzin, Saʿd al-Quraẓ, came to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ and said: 'Who will lead the people in prayer?' He said: 'Call Khālid b. Yazīd.' So he stood and led the people in prayer. Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Ḥazm, who said: The muezzin came to ʿUthmān and called to prayer, and he said: 'No, go down. Go to the one who will lead the prayer.' So he came to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and he ordered Sahl b. Ḥunayf, who led the prayer on the day the final siege was imposed—that was the night he sighted the crescent of Dhū al-Ḥijjah—and he led them until the day of the festival, when ʿAlī led the festival prayer, then he led them until he was killed.
