Translation
✧ Mention of Those Who Died in This Year ʿUwaymir b. ʿĀmir b. Zayd b. Qays b. ʿĀʾishah b. Umayyah ʿUwaymir b. ʿĀmir b. Zayd b. Qays b. ʿĀʾishah b. Umayyah, Abū al-Dardāʾ: He was the last of his household to embrace Islam. He had been clinging to an idol of his, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah had been a sworn brother of his in the Jāhiliyyah. Ibn Rawāḥah embraced Islam and invited him, but he refused and shunned him. One day he came to him, and when he left his house, Ibn Rawāḥah entered and struck the idol with his adze and cut it. His wife said: "You have destroyed me, O Ibn Rawāḥah." He left, and Abū al-Dardāʾ came and found the woman weeping in fear of him. He said: "What is the matter with you?" She said: "Your brother Ibn Rawāḥah entered upon the idol and did to it what you see." He became extremely angry, then he reflected to himself and said: "If it had any good, it would have defended itself." So he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam. They differed as to whether he witnessed Uḥud or not. He did witness many expeditions after that. From Khuthaymah, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, he said: I was a merchant before the Prophet ﷺ was sent. When Muḥammad was sent, I combined trade and worship, but they did not go together, so I chose worship and abandoned trade. From Umm al-Dardāʾ, she said: Abū al-Dardāʾ had three hundred and sixty-three friends for the sake of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for whom he supplicated in prayer. She said: I said to him about that, and he said: There is no man who supplicates for his brother in his absence except that Allah entrusts two angels to him who say: "And for you the like of that." Should I not desire that the angels supplicate for me? From Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, he said: Abū al-Dardāʾ was appointed as judge, and in the morning the people came to congratulate him. He said: "Do you congratulate me on the judgeship when I have been placed at the edge of a pit whose distance is farther than Aden? If people knew what is in judgeship, they would take it by turns out of aversion to it and dislike for it. And if people knew what is in the call to prayer, they would take it by turns out of desire for it and eagerness for it." From Luqmān b. ʿĀmir, from Abū al-Dardāʾ: He used to buy sparrows from the boys and release them, saying: "Go and live." From ʿAmr b. Maymūn b. Mihrān, from his father, he said: Umm al-Dardāʾ said to Abū al-Dardāʾ: "If I am in need after you, may I eat from charity?" He said: "No, work and eat." She said: "And if I become too weak to work?" He said: "Glean the ears of grain, but do not eat charity." He said: From Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, that Abū al-Dardāʾ used to say: "Were it not for three things, I would not care when I die: were it not that I thirst in the midday heat, and were it not that I rub my face in the dust, and were it not that I enjoin good and forbid evil." He said: From Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah: Abū al-Dardāʾ fell ill, and his companions entered upon him and said: "O Abū al-Dardāʾ, what do you complain of?" He said: "I complain of my sins." They said: "And what do you desire?" He said: "I desire Paradise." They said: "Should we not call a physician for you?" He said: "He is the one who laid me down." Abū al-Dardāʾ died in Syria in this year. It is also said: in the year thirty-two. Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd b. ʿĀmir b. Anīf Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd b. ʿĀmir b. Anīf, of Ashjaʿ: He is the one who caused dissension among the confederates until they dispersed. He emigrated and settled in al-Madīnah, and he used to raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whenever he raided. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him [when he intended Tabūk to encourage the people to give aid], and he died in the time of ʿUthmān. Yazdajird [Yazdajird: The king Yazdajird died in this year, as has been previously explained.] Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī In it died Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī, and he was a Badrī. It is also said: in the year thirty-two, and it is said: in the year fifty-one. Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī In it died Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī. It is also said: he died in the year sixty. According to this saying, he was the last of the Badrīs to die. (Usayd with ḍammah on the hamzah.) Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim and al-Ṭufayl In it died Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, (and his brother al-Ṭufayl). Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb b. Umayyah (And Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb b. Umayyah, and he was eighty-eight years old.)
