The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
Translation
✧ Mention of the falling of the Prophet's ﷺ seal-ring into the well of Arīs In this year, the seal-ring of the Prophet ﷺ fell from the hand of ʿUthmān into the well of Arīs, which is two miles from Madinah. It had little water, and its bottom was never reached thereafter. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had adopted it when he wanted to correspond with the non-Arabs, calling them to Allah (Exalted is He). It was said to him: "They will not accept a letter unless it is sealed." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that a seal-ring be made for him of iron. When it was made, he placed it on his finger. Then Jibrāʾīl came to him and forbade him from it, so he cast it aside. He ordered, and a seal-ring was made for him of copper, and he placed it on his finger. Jibrāʾīl said to him: "Cast it aside," so he cast it aside. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a seal-ring of silver, and it was made for him, and he placed it on his finger. Jibrāʾīl commanded him to keep it, so he kept it. Its inscription was three lines: Muḥammad one line, Rasūl one line, and Allāh one line. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore it as a seal-ring until he passed away. Then Abū Bakr wore it until he passed away, then ʿUmar until he passed away, then ʿUthmān wore it for six years. They dug a well in Madinah as a drinking place for the Muslims, and he sat at the edge of the well and began toying with the seal-ring, and it fell from his hand into the well. They searched for it in the well and drew out all the water in it, but they could not find it. He set a great sum of money for whoever brought it, and he grieved for it with intense grief. When he despaired of it, he made another seal-ring in its likeness and inscription, and it remained on his finger until he perished. When he was killed, the seal-ring disappeared, and it is not known who took it.
