The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
غَزْوَةُ الْأَنْدَلُسِ لَمَّا افْتُتِحَتْ إِفْرِيقِيَّةُ بَعَثَ عُثْمَانُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ نَافِعِ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ وَعَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ نَافِعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ قَيْسٍ مِنْ فَوْرِهِمَا إِلَى الْأَنْدَلُسِ، فَأَتَيَاهَا مِنْ قِبَلِ الْبَحْرِ، وَكَتَبَ عُثْمَانُ إِلَى الَّذِينَ خَرَجُوا إِلَيْهَا يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الْقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةَ إِنَّمَا تُفْتَحُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْبَحْرِ، وَأَنْتُمْ إِذَا فَتَحْتُمُ الْأَنْدَلُسَ فَأَنْتُمْ شُرَكَاءُ لِمَنْ يَفْتَتِحُ قُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةَ فِي الْأَجْرِ آخِرَ الزَّمَانِ، وَالسَّلَامُ. قَالَ: فَسَارُوا إِلَيْهَا فَافْتَتَحُوهَا. وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ وَالْمِنَّةُ.
Translation
✧ The Campaign of Al-Andalus When Ifrīqiyya had been conquered, ʿUthmān sent ʿAbd Allāh b. Nāfiʿ b. al-Ḥuṣayn and ʿAbd Allāh b. Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd Qays at once to al-Andalus, and they came to it from the direction of the sea. ʿUthmān wrote to those who set out to it, saying: Constantinople will only be conquered from the direction of the sea, and if you conquer al-Andalus, you will be partners with whoever conquers Constantinople in the reward at the end of time, and peace be upon you. He said: So they marched to it and conquered it. And to God belongs praise and favor.
