Translation
✧ Mention of the virtue of Jonah ﷺ God, exalted is He, said: And indeed Jonah was among the messengers [al-Ṣāffāt: 139]. And He, exalted, mentioned him among the noble prophets, in the two sūrahs “al-Nisāʾ” and “al-Anʿām” – upon them from God be the best prayer and peace. And from ʿAbd Allāh, he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: It is not fitting for anyone to say: I am better than Jonah b. Mattā. And from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Hurmuz al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, regarding the story of the Muslim who slapped the face of the Jew when he said: No, by the One who chose Moses above the worlds. Al-Bukhārī said at its end: And I do not say that anyone is better than Jonah b. Mattā – meaning, it is not for anyone to prefer himself over Jonah. And in another narration: It is not fitting for anyone to prefer me over Jonah b. Mattā, as has come in some ḥadīths: Do not prefer me over the prophets, nor over Jonah b. Mattā. And this is from the kind of self-deprecation and humility on his part – the prayers and peace of God be upon him, and upon the rest of God’s prophets and messengers.
