✧ The conquest of Iṣbahān. In the year twenty-one, the Muslims also conquered, after Nahāwand, the city of Jayy – which is the city of Iṣbahān – after much fighting and lengthy affairs. They made peace with the Muslims, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh wrote for them a document of security and peace. Thirty men from among them fled to Kirmān and did not make peace with the Muslims. It is also said that the one who conquered Iṣbahān was al-Nuʿmān b. Muqarrin and that he was killed there. The commander of the Magians, Dhū al-Ḥājibayn, fell from his horse, his stomach split open, and he died, and his companions were routed. The correct account is that the one who conquered Iṣbahān was ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿItbān, who was the governor of al-Kūfah. ʿAbd Allāh marched with those who were with him and those who followed him from the army of al-Nuʿmān at Nahāwand toward Iṣbahān. The commander of its army was al-Asbīdān, and at the head of his vanguard was Shahryār b. Jādhawyah, an old man of great age, with a large force. The vanguard of the polytheists was at a rural district of Iṣbahān. They fought a fierce battle. The old man called for single combat, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Warqāʾ al-Riyāḥī came out to meet him and killed him. The people of Iṣbahān were routed, and that rural district has been called Rustāq al-Shaykh to this day. Al-Asbīdān made peace with them concerning Rustāq al-Shaykh, and it was the first rural district taken from Iṣbahān. Then ʿAbd Allāh marched to the city of Jayy, which is the city of Iṣbahān. He reached it while the king of Iṣbahān was al-Fādhūsfān. He encamped with the people at Jayy, besieged it, and fought against it. Then al-Fādhūsfān made peace with him concerning Iṣbahān, on condition that those who remained would pay the jizyah and keep their property, and that those whose land had been taken by force would be treated like them, and that whoever refused and departed would have his land for the Muslims. Abū Mūsā came to ʿAbd Allāh from the direction of al-Ahwāz, having already made peace. The people came out of Jayy and entered into the protection of the dhimmah, except thirty men from the people of Iṣbahān who joined Kirmān. ʿAbd Allāh and Abū Mūsā entered Jayy, and he wrote to ʿUmar about that. ʿUmar's letter came to ʿAbd Allāh: "March until you come to Suhayl b. ʿAdī and be with him in fighting those in Kirmān." So he marched, leaving al-Sāʾib b. al-Aqraʿ as his deputy over Iṣbahān, and he caught up with Suhayl before reaching Kirmān.
