The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Truce of Junday-Sābūr After the Muslims marched from al-Sūs, they encamped at Junday-Sābūr, with Zirr b. ʿAbd Allāh besieging them. They remained there fighting them, when a message of safe-conduct was thrown to those in the Muslim camp, and no sooner had the Muslims been taken by surprise than its gates were opened, its markets were brought out, and its people came forth. The Muslims asked them, and they said, “You threw us a safe-conduct, so we accepted it and agreed to the jizyah.” They said, “We did not do that!” The Muslims inquired, and it turned out that a slave called Makthaf, whose origin was from there, had done this. They said, “He is a slave.” Its people said, “We do not distinguish the slave from the free man; we have accepted the jizyah and have not altered it. If you wish, then betray us.” So they wrote to ʿUmar, and he ratified their safe-conduct; thus they granted them security and departed from them.
