The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Conquest of Qaysāriyyah and the Siege of Ghazzah In this year Qaysāriyyah was conquered; it is also said: in the year nineteen; and it is said: in the year twenty. Its cause was that ʿUmar wrote to Yazīd b. Abī Sufyān to send Muʿāwiyah to Qaysāriyyah, and ʿUmar wrote to Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān commanding him of that. He wrote to him: To proceed: I have appointed you over Qaysāriyyah, so march to it and seek help from Allah against them, and say often: There is no might and no power except with Allah, the Exalted, the Great. Allah is our Lord and our Trust, and our Hope and our Protector; for how excellent a Protector and how excellent a Helper. So he marched to it and besieged it, and its people engaged him in close combat many times. The last of these was an engagement in which they fought a mighty battle, and Muʿāwiyah resolved firmly against them and exerted himself in fighting until Allah granted him victory. The affair did not conclude until about eighty thousand of them were killed, and the hundred thousand was completed by those who fled from the battle. He sent news of the conquest and the fifths to the Commander of the Faithful ʿUmar ؓ. ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz had besieged al-Qīqār at Ghazzah and began corresponding with him, but no one made clear to him what he wanted. So he came to him as if he were ʿAlqamah's messenger, and al-Qīqār ordered a man to sit in wait for him on the road, so that when he passed by him he would kill him. ʿAlqamah noticed and said: There are with me a number of people who share with me in counsel, so I will go and bring them to you. Al-Qīqār sent to that man not to confront him. ʿAlqamah left his presence and did not return, and he did as ʿAmr had done with al-Arṭabūn. Ibn Jarīr said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb wrote to ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to march to Īliyāʾ and to engage its commander in battle, and on his way near al-Ramlah he passed by a band of Romans, and it was.
