The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
Translation
✧ ʿUmar gathered the people for the tarāwīḥ prayer, and in this year, meaning the year fourteen. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ commanded standing in prayer in the mosques during the month of Ramaḍān, and he wrote to the garrison cities commanding the Muslims to do that. On the authority of ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, he related that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Qārī informed him]: that ʿUmar [b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ] went out one night during Ramaḍān, accompanied by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Qārī, and he saw the people praying scattered in separate groups in the mosque. ʿUmar said: If we gathered them behind one man, that would be better. So he gathered them behind Ubayy b. Kaʿb. [Then he went out while they were all praying behind Ubayy b. Kaʿb together], and he said: What an excellent innovation this is, but the prayer they sleep through is superior, that is the last part of the night. And he wrote about it to the garrison cities. On the authority of Abū Isḥāq al-Hamadhānī], he said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib went out on the first night of the month of Ramaḍān, and he heard the recitation in the mosques and saw the lamps shining, and he said: May God illuminate the grave of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb as he illuminated the mosques of God Almighty with the Qurʾān.
