The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
بَعْثُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخِطَابِ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ عَلَى الْعِرَاقِ . ثُمَّ بَعَثَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ الزُّهْرِيَّ أَحَدَ الْعَشَرَةِ، فِي سِتَّةِ آلَافٍ أَمِيرًا عَلَى الْعِرَاقِ، وَكَتَبَ إِلَى جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَالْمُثَنَّى بْنِ حَارِثَةَ أَنْ يَكُونَا تَبَعًا لَهُ، وَأَنْ يَسْمَعَا لَهُ وَيُطِيعَا، فَلَمَّا وَصَلَ إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ كَانَا مَعَهُ، وَكَانَا قَدْ تَنَازَعَا الْإِمْرَةَ، فَالْمُثَنَّى يَقُولُ لِجَرِيرٍ: إِنَّمَا بَعَثَكَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَدَدًا لِي. وَيَقُولُ جَرِيرٌ: إِنَّمَا بَعَثَنِي أَمِيرًا عَلَيْكَ. فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ سَعْدٌ عَلَى إِمْرَةِ الْعِرَاقِ انْقَطَعَ نِزَاعُهُمَا.
Translation
✧ The dispatch by ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb of Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ to Iraq. Then the Commander of the Faithful ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb dispatched Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ al-Zuhrī, one of the ten, at the head of six thousand as commander over Iraq, and he wrote to Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh and al-Muthannā b. Ḥārithah that they should be subordinate to him and that they should listen to him and obey. When he arrived in Iraq, they were with him, and they had been disputing the command, al-Muthannā saying to Jarīr, “The Commander of the Faithful only sent you as reinforcements for me,” and Jarīr saying, “He only sent me as commander over you.” When Saʿd arrived in command of Iraq their dispute ceased.
