The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ
فَلَمَّا قَرَأَ خَالِدٌ الْكِتَابَ قَالَ: هَذَا مِنْ عَمَلِ الْأُعَيْسِرِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، وَدَعَاهُمْ خَالِدٌ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَأَسْلَمُوا عَنْ آخِرِهِمْ وَرَجَعُوا إِلَى الْحَقِّ، وَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ خَالِدٌ بَعْضَ مَا كَانَ أَخَذَ ✧ The killing of Musaylimah the liar, may Allah curse him and disgrace him. When al-Ṣiddīq was satisfied with Khālid b. al-Walīd and accepted his excuse, he sent him to fight Banū Ḥanīfah in al-Yamāmah. The Muslims went out with him in full force, with Thābit b. Qays b. Shammās in command of the Anṣār. He marched and did not pass by any of the apostates without inflicting exemplary punishment on them. He passed by the cavalry of the followers of Sajāḥ and scattered them, and ordered that they be expelled from the Arabian Peninsula. Al-Ṣiddīq sent a detachment after Khālid to be a support behind him. Before him, he had sent ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl and Shuraḥbīl b. Ḥasanah against Musaylimah, but they could not withstand Banū Ḥanīfah, because they numbered about forty thousand fighting men. ʿIkrimah hastened before his companion Shuraḥbīl arrived, engaged them, and was defeated, so he waited for Khālid. When Musaylimah heard of Khālid's arrival, he encamped at a place called ʿAqrabāʾ, on the edge of al-Yamāmah, with the cultivated land behind them. He called on the people and urged them, and the people of al-Yamāmah gathered to him. He placed al-Muḥkam b. al-Ṭufayl and al-Rajjāl b. ʿUnfuwah b. Nahshal on the two flanks of his army. This al-Rajjāl was his friend who had testified that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that he had associated Musaylimah b. Ḥabīb with him in the affair. This accursed man was one of the greatest causes of the misguidance of the people of al-Yamāmah, until they followed Musaylimah, may Allah curse them both. This al-Rajjāl had come as a delegate to the Prophet ﷺ and had recited "al-Baqarah," and at the time of the apostasy he came to Abū Bakr, who sent him to the people of al-Yamāmah to call them to Allah and keep them firm in Islam, but he apostatized along with Musaylimah and testified to his prophethood. Sayf b. ʿUmar said with his chain of transmission from Abū Hurayrah: I was one day with the Prophet ﷺ in a group, and al-Rajjāl b. ʿUnfuwah was with us. He said: "Among you there is a man whose molar tooth in the Fire will be greater than Uḥud." The people passed away, and I and al-Rajjāl remained. I was afraid of that for him, until al-Rajjāl went out with Musaylimah and testified to his prophethood. The trial of al-Rajjāl was greater than the trial of Musaylimah. Khālid drew near, having placed Shuraḥbīl b. Ḥasanah in command of the vanguard, and Zayd and Abū Ḥudhayfah on the two flanks. During the night the vanguard encountered about forty, or it is said sixty, horsemen under Mujjāʿah b. Murārah, who had gone to seek revenge for himself against Banū Tamīm and Banū ʿĀmir and was returning to his people. They captured them. When they were brought to Khālid, he asked them about their situation, and they offered excuses, but he did not believe them. He ordered that all of them be struck on the neck except Mujjāʿah, whom he kept in chains with him, because of his knowledge of war and stratagem. He was a chief among Banū Ḥanīfah, noble and obeyed. It is said that when they were presented to Khālid, he said to them: "What do you say, O Banū Ḥanīfah?" They said: "We say: from us a prophet and from you a prophet." So he killed them except one named Sāriyah, who said to him: "O man, if tomorrow you want good or evil through the exchange of these men, then spare this man," meaning Mujjāʿah b. Murārah. Khālid spared him in chains and placed him in the tent with his wife, saying: "Take good care of him." When the two armies faced each other, Musaylimah said to his people: "Today is the day of zeal. Today, if you are defeated, the women will be taken captive and married off without dowries. So fight for your honor and defend your women." The Muslims advanced until Khālid encamped on a sand hill overlooking al-Yamāmah. He pitched his camp there. The banner of the Muhājirūn was with Sālim, the mawlā of Abū Ḥudhayfah, and the banner of the Anṣār was with Thābit b. Qays b. Shammās, while the Arabs were under their own banners. Mujjāʿah b. Murārah was in chains in the tent with Umm Tamīm, the wife of Khālid. The Muslims and the disbelievers clashed. The Muslims had a setback, and the bedouins fled until Banū Ḥanīfah entered the tent of Khālid b. al-Walīd and were about to kill Umm Tamīm, but Mujjāʿah protected her and said: "What a good free woman this is!" Al-Rajjāl b. ʿUnfuwah, may Allah curse him, was killed in this setback; Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb killed him. Then the Companions encouraged one another. Thābit b. Qays b. Shammās said: "How badly you have accustomed your peers!" They called out from every side: "Come to our rescue, O Khālid!" A band of the Muhājirūn and Anṣār broke through, and al-Barāʾ b. Mālik fought fiercely. When he saw battle, he would be seized by a shivering, men would sit on his back, and he would tremble until he urinated in his trousers; then he would spring up like a lion. Banū Ḥanīfah fought a battle the like of which had never been seen. The Companions exhorted one another, saying: "O people of Sūrat al-Baqarah, magic has been nullified today!" Thābit b. Qays dug his feet into the ground up to the middle of his shins while carrying the banner of the Anṣār, after he had perfumed himself and put on his shroud. He remained steadfast until he was killed there. The Muhājirūn said to Sālim, the mawlā of Abū Ḥudhayfah: "Do you fear that we may be attacked from your side?" He said: "Then what a bad bearer of the Qur'an I would be!" Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "O people, clench your molars, strike your enemy, and advance forward." And he said: "By Allah, I will not speak until Allah defeats them or I meet Allah and speak to Him with my proof." He was killed as a martyr, ؓ. Abū Ḥudhayfah said: "O people of the Qur'an, adorn the Qur'an with deeds," and he charged into them until he drove them far back and was struck, ؓ. Khālid b. al-Walīd charged until he passed beyond them and moved opposite Musaylimah, watching for a chance to reach him and kill him. Then he returned and leaped between the two ranks, calling for single combat, saying: "I am the son of al-Walīd the old, I am the son of ʿĀmir and Zayd." Then he called out the battle cry of the Muslims, which that day was "Yā Muḥammadāh!" Anyone who came out against him he killed, and nothing came near him but he consumed it. The tide of battle turned. Then he drew near Musaylimah and offered him a fair settlement and a return to the truth, but the devil of Musaylimah kept twisting his neck, and he would not accept anything from him. Every time Musaylimah wanted to come near to the matter, his devil turned him away from it. Khālid turned away from him, having separated the Muhājirūn from the Anṣār from the bedouins, and every group of brothers was under its own banner, fighting beneath it, so that people would know from where they were being attacked. The Companions showed steadfastness in this place the like of which had never been seen, and they kept advancing against the throats of their enemy until Allah granted them victory. The disbelievers turned their backs, and they pursued them, killing them from behind and placing their swords on their necks wherever they wished, until they drove them into the Garden of Death. Muḥkam al-Yamāmah, that is Muḥkam b. al-Ṭufayl, may Allah curse him, had advised them to enter it, so they entered it, and in it was the enemy of Allah Musaylimah, may Allah curse him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr caught up with Muḥkam b. al-Ṭufayl while he was delivering a speech and shot him with an arrow in the neck, killing him. Banū Ḥanīfah closed the garden gate behind them, and the Companions surrounded them. Al-Barāʾ b. Mālik said: "O assembly of Muslims, throw me over to them into the garden." They carried him on shields and raised them with spears until they threw him over its wall, and he kept fighting them at its gate until he opened it. The Muslims entered the garden through its walls and gates, killing those inside from among the apostates of the people of al-Yamāmah, until they reached Musaylimah, may Allah curse him. There he was, standing in a gap in a wall, like an ash-colored camel, foaming at the mouth and leaning against something, senseless with rage. When his devil came over him, he would foam until the foam came out of the corners of his mouth. Waḥshī b. Ḥarb, the mawlā of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, the killer of Ḥamzah, advanced on him and threw his javelin at him, striking him, and it came out the other side. Then Abū Dujānah Simāk b. Kharashah rushed at him and struck him with his sword, and he fell. A woman from the palace cried out: "Alas, O Commander of the Faithful! The black slave has killed him!" The total number of those killed in the garden and in the battle was close to ten thousand fighting men—or it is said twenty-one thousand. Of the Muslims, six hundred—or it is said five hundred—were killed, and Allah knows best. Among them were leaders of the Companions and eminent men, who will be mentioned later. Khālid went out with Mujjāʿah b. Murārah shuffling in his chains, and he showed him the slain so that he could identify Musaylimah for him. When they passed by al-Rajjāl b. ʿUnfuwah, Khālid said to him: "Is this him?" He said: "No, by Allah, this one is better than him. This is al-Rajjāl b. ʿUnfuwah." Sayf b. ʿUmar said: Then they passed by a small man, yellowish, with a snub nose, and he said: "This is your companion." Khālid said: "May Allah make you ugly for following this one." The expedition of al-Yamāmah Then Khālid sent out cavalry around al-Yamāmah to collect whatever property and captives were around its fortresses. Then he resolved to attack the fortresses, in which only women, children, and old men remained. Mujjāʿah deceived him, saying: "They are full of men and fighting men. Come, make peace with me on their behalf." Khālid made peace with him because of the exhaustion he saw among the Muslims; they were worn out from the many wars and fighting. He said: "Let me go to them so that they may agree with me on the peace." Khālid said: "Go." Mujjāʿah went to them and ordered the women to put on armor and appear on the tops of the fortresses. Khālid looked and saw the battlements full of people's heads, so he thought they were as Mujjāʿah had said. The peace was concluded, and he made peace with them for gold, silver, coats of mail, horses, and half the slaves. Khālid was told: "Mujjāʿah has deceived you." He said to him: "O Mujjāʿah, you deceived me." He said: "They are my people, and you have annihilated them, so do not blame me for that." When he finished fighting Banū Ḥanīfah, he proposed to Mujjāʿah for his daughter and insisted, so Mujjāʿah married her to him. When that reached Abū Bakr, he wrote to him: "You are an idle-minded man! You marry women while around your tent are twelve hundred Muslims whose blood has not yet dried?! Now then, when this letter of mine reaches you, join the gatherings of Muslims with you and go to Iraq." He sent the letter with Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī and said: "Do not leave him until you make him set out." When Khālid read the letter, he said: "This is the work of the little one, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb." Khālid called them to Islam, and they all embraced Islam and returned to the truth. Khālid returned to them some of what he had taken of captives and drove the rest to al-Ṣiddīq. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib took a concubine from among them, and she is the mother of his son Muḥammad, who is called Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyyah, ؓ. Ḍirār b. al-Azwar said about this expedition of al-Yamāmah: If the south wind were asked about us, it would tell On the evening when ʿAqrabāʾ and Malham flowed with blood And the branch of the valley flowed until its stones Were made to glisten with the blood of the people On an evening when spears could not avail in their places Nor arrows, only the sharp Mashrafī sword If you seek the disbelievers, O south wind, without blame, Then I am a follower of the religion, a Muslim I strive in jihad when jihad is booty, And Allah knows best the man who strives. Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ, Muḥammad b. Jarīr, and many of the early scholars said: The battle of al-Yamāmah took place in the year 11 AH. Ibn Qāniʿ said: At the end of it. Al-Wāqidī and others said: It was in the year 12 AH. The reconciliation between the two views is that its beginning was in 11 AH and its completion in 12 AH. And Allah knows best. The rhymed prose of Musaylimah the liar When the delegations of Banū Ḥanīfah came to al-Ṣiddīq, he said to them: "Let us hear something of the Qur'an of Musaylimah." They said: "Will you excuse us, O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "There is no way around it." They said: "He used to say: 'O frog, daughter of two frogs, croak as much as you croak, you do not muddy the water, nor do you prevent the drinker; your head is in the water and your tail is in the mud.' And he used to say: 'By the sowers of seed, and the reapers of harvest, and the winnowers of wheat, and the grinders of flour, and the bakers of bread, and the makers of tharīd, and the eaters of morsels, with fat and butter. You have been preferred over the people of the desert, and the people of the towns have not surpassed you. Protect your companion, shelter the beggar, and oppose the oppressor.'" They mentioned other things of this nonsense that children at play would disdain to utter. It is said that al-Ṣiddīq said to them: "Woe to you! Where were your minds going? This speech did not come from a deity." He used to say: "By the elephant, and what will make you know what the elephant is? It has a long trunk." And he used to say: "By the dark night, and the prowling wolf, no lion has cut through anything wet or dry." His earlier saying has been mentioned: "Allah has blessed the pregnant woman; He brought forth from her a living soul that walks, from between the membranes and the bowels." And other things of this silly, feeble, frigid, ugly speech. Abū Bakr b. al-Bāqillānī, may Allah have mercy on him, in his book "Iʿjāz al-Qurʾān," cited things from the speech of these ignorant false prophets such as Musaylimah, Ṭulayḥah, al-Aswad, Sajāḥ, and others, which indicate the weakness of their minds and the minds of those who followed them in their error and deception. It has been narrated to us from ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ that he went as a delegate to Musaylimah during his days of ignorance, and Musaylimah said to him: "What has been revealed to your companion at this time?" ʿAmr said to him: "A short, eloquent sūrah has been revealed to him." He said: "And what is it?" He said: "It has been revealed to him: 'By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to patience.'" He said: Musaylimah thought for a while, then raised his head and said: "The like of it has been revealed to me." ʿAmr said to him: "And what is it?" Musaylimah said: "O furry one, O furry one, you are only two ears and a chest, and the rest of you is contemptible and paltry." Then he said: "How do you see it, O ʿAmr?" ʿAmr said to him: "By Allah, you know that I know that you are lying." The scholars of history mentioned that he used to imitate the Prophet ﷺ. He heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat into a well and its water became abundant, so he spat into a well and its water dried up completely, and into another, its water became bitter. He performed ablution and watered palm trees with his ablution water, and they withered and perished. Young boys were brought to him for blessing, and he wiped their heads; some of them became bald, and some of them developed a lisp. It is said that he supplicated for a man who had pain in his eyes and wiped them, and the man went blind. Sayf b. ʿUmar said, with his chain of transmission from ʿUmayr b. Ṭalḥah, from his father, that he came to al-Yamāmah and said: "Where is Musaylimah?" They said: "Hush — the Messenger of Allah." He said: "No, not until I see him." When he came to him, he said: "Are you Musaylimah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Who comes to you?" He said: "A Merciful One (Raḥmān)." He said: "In light or in darkness?" He said: "In darkness." He said: "I bear witness that you are a liar and that Muḥammad is truthful, but a liar of Rabīʿah is dearer to us than a truthful one of Muḍar." And this coarse Bedouin followed him, may Allah curse him, until he was killed with him on the day of ʿAqrabāʾ — may Allah not have mercy on him.
