✧ Mention of his wives ﷺ [the Mothers of the Believers] [their names] Allah, Exalted is He, said: O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women, if you fear [Allah]; then do not be soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech. And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification. And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom. Indeed, Allah is ever Subtle and Acquainted [al-Ahzāb: 32–34]. And Abū Bakr b. Abī Khaythamah narrated from ʿUthmān b. Zufar, [who said:] Sayf b. ʿUmar narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, from Hind b. Hind b. Abī Hālah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah, Exalted is He, refused for me to give in marriage or to marry except to the people of Paradise. There is no disagreement that he, peace and blessings be upon him, died leaving nine wives, and they are ʿĀʾishah bt. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq al-Taymiyyah, and Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb al-ʿAdawiyyah, and Umm Ḥabībah Ramlah bt. Abī Sufyān Ṣakhr b. Ḥarb b. Umayyah al-Umawiyyah, and Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh al-Asadiyyah, and Umm Salamah Hind bt. Abī Umayyah al-Makhzūmiyyah, and Maymūnah bt. al-Ḥārith al-Hilāliyyah, and Sawdah bt. Zamʿah al-ʿĀmiriyyah, and Juwayriyyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār al-Muṣṭaliqiyyah, and Ṣafiyyah bt. Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab al-Naḍriyyah al-Isrāʾīliyyah al-Hārūniyyah, ؓ and may He be pleased with them. He had two concubines: they were Māriyah bt. Shamʿūn al-Qibṭiyyah al-Miṣriyyah from the district of Anṣinā, and she is the mother of his son Ibrāhīm, ﷺ, and Rayḥānah bt. Shamʿūn al-Quraẓiyyah; she accepted Islam, then he freed her, and she joined her family, and some people claim that she was veiled. And Allah knows best. And the great ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī narrated from the route of Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married fifteen women; he consummated marriage with thirteen of them, eleven were gathered with him, and he died leaving nine. Then he mentioned these nine whom we have mentioned, ؓ. And Sayf narrated from Saʿīd b. ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah something similar; she said: The two women with whom he did not consummate marriage are ʿAmrah bt. Yazīd al-Ghifāriyyah and al-Shanbāʾ. As for ʿAmrah, he was alone with her and uncovered her and saw on her a patch of leprosy, so he returned her and made the dower obligatory for her, and she was forbidden to others. As for al-Shanbāʾ, when she was brought in to him, she was not compliant, so he left her, waiting for her compliance. When his son Ibrāhīm died, ﷺ, at that juncture, she said: If he were a prophet, his son would not have died. So he divorced her and made the dower obligatory for her, and she was forbidden to others. She said: Those who were gathered with him are ʿĀʾishah, Sawdah, Ḥafṣah, Umm Salamah, Umm Ḥabībah, Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh, Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah, Juwayriyyah, Ṣafiyyah, Maymūnah, and Umm Sharīk. I say: In “Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī,” from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go round to his wives, and they were eleven women. The well-known [view] is that Umm Sharīk was not consummated with, but the meaning of the eleven upon whom he used to go round is the nine mentioned and the two slave women, Māriyah and Rayḥānah. Al-Zuhrī said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married al-ʿĀliyah bt. Ẓabyān b. ʿAmr of Banū Abī Bakr b. Kilāb, and consummated marriage with her, then divorced her ﷺ. Al-Bayhaqī said: Thus it is in my book. In the narration of others: he did not consummate marriage with her, then he divorced her. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said, from Hishām b. Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī: A man of Banū Abī Bakr b. Kilāb narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married al-ʿĀliyah bt. Ẓabyān b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd b. Abī Bakr b. Kilāb, and she stayed with him for a long time, then he divorced her. Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān narrated, from Ḥajjāj b. Abī Manīʿ, from his grandfather, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, that al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān al-Kilābī is the one who pointed her out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I heard from behind the veil, he said: O Messenger of Allah, would you like the sister of Umm Shabīb? Umm Shabīb is the wife of al-Ḍaḥḥāk. And with it al-Zuhrī said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married a woman from Banū ʿAmr b. Kilāb, and he was informed that she had a whiteness [leprosy], so he divorced her and did not consummate marriage with her. I say: The apparent [conclusion] is that this is the one before it. And Allah knows best. He said: He married the sister of Banū al-Jawn al-Kindī, and they are allies of Banū Fazārah, and she sought refuge from him, so he said: “You have sought refuge with a mighty one; join your family.” So he divorced her and did not consummate marriage with her. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a concubine called Māriyah. She bore him a boy named Ibrāhīm, and he died when he had filled the cradle. He had a slave woman called Rayḥānah bt. Shamʿūn, of the People of the Book from Khunāfah, and they are a clan of Banū Qurayẓah; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ freed her, and they claim that she was veiled. The ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated with his chain, from ʿAlī b. Mujāhid, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Khawlah bt. al-Hudhayl b. Hubayrah al-Taghlibī, and her mother was Khirniq bt. Khalīfah, sister of Diḥyah b. Khalīfah, and she was transported to him from Syria but died on the way. Then he married her maternal aunt Sharāf bt. Faḍālah b. Khalīfah, and she was transported to him from Syria but also died on the way. Yūnus b. Bukayr said, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had married Asmāʾ bt. Kaʿb al-Jawniyyah, but did not consummate marriage with her until he divorced her, and he married ʿAmrah bt. Yazīd, one of the women of Banū Kilāb then of Banū al-Waḥīd, and she had been before him with al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he divorced her and did not consummate marriage with her. Al-Bayhaqī said: These two are the ones whom al-Zuhrī mentioned and did not name, except that Ibn Isḥāq did not mention al-ʿĀliyah. Al-Bayhaqī said: Al-Ḥākim informed us, al-Aṣamm informed us, Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār informed us, from Yūnus b. Bukayr, from Zakariyyā b. Abī Zāʾidah, from al-Shaʿbī, who said: Women gave themselves to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he consummated marriage with some of them, and he deferred some of them, and he did not approach them until he died, and they were not married after him; among them was Umm Sharīk. That is His saying, Exalted is He: You may defer whom you will of them, and you may receive to yourself whom you will. And whoever you desire of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame upon you [al-Aḥzāb: 51]. Al-Bayhaqī said: It has been narrated to us from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, from his father, who said: Khawlah — meaning bt. Ḥakīm — was among those who gave themselves to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And al-Bayhaqī said: It has been narrated to us in the ḥadīth of Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī in the story of al-Jawniyyah who sought refuge and whom he returned to her family, that her name was Umaymah bt. al-Nuʿmān b. Sharāḥīl.
