Preparation of the Prophet ﷺ and his burial
تَجْهِيزُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَدَفْنُهُ: بَعْدَ اسْتِقْرَارِ أَمْرِ الْخِلَافَةِ شَرَعَ الصَّحَابَةُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فِي تَجْهِيزِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَغَسَلُوهُ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُهُ وَقَدْ أَخْبَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ فَقَالَتْ: لَوِ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا اسْتَدْبَرْتُ، مَا غَسَّلَهُ إِلَّا نِسَاؤُهُ وَعَنْهَا ؓ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُفِّنَ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَثْوَابٍ بِيضٍ سَحُولِيَّةٍ يَمَانِيَّةٍ مِنْ كُرْسُفٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا قَمِيصٌ وَلَا عِمَامَةٌ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ جِهَازِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وُضِعَ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ النَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ ﷺ أَرْسَالًا، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ النِّسَاءُ ثُمَّ الصِّبْيَانُ. وَقَدِ اخْتَلَفَ الصَّحَابَةُ فِي دَفْنِهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَخْبَرَهُ الصِّدِّيقُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «مَا قُبِضَ نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا دُفِنَ حَيْثُ يُقْبَضُ» فَرُفِعَ فِرَاشُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَحَفَرُوا لَهُ تَحْتَهُ
Translation
✧ Preparation of the Prophet ﷺ and his burial: After the matter of the caliphate was settled, the Companions ؓ began to prepare the Prophet ﷺ for burial. They washed him ﷺ while his clothes were still on him. ʿĀʾishah ؓ reported, saying: "If I had known in advance what I later learned, none would have washed him except his wives." And from her ؓ, that the Messenger of God ﷺ was shrouded in three white garments of Sahuoli Yemeni cotton, with neither a shirt nor a turban. When the preparation of the Prophet ﷺ was completed, he was placed on his bier in his house, and then the people entered to pray over him ﷺ in groups. Then the women entered, then the children. The Companions differed regarding his burial place ﷺ, until al-Ṣiddīq informed them that he had heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "No prophet dies but he is buried where he died." So the bed of the Messenger of God ﷺ on which he had died was lifted, and they dug for him beneath it.
