✧ The Thirty-Third Chapter: On the Expedition of Kurz b. Jābir or Saʿīd b. Zayd ؓ against the ʿUraynīs. Imam Aḥmad, the two Shaykhs, Ibn Jarīr, Ibn ʿAwāna, Abū Yaʿlā, and al-Ismāʿīlī related from Anas, and al-Bayhaqī from Jābir [and al-Bukhārī and al-Bayhaqī related] from Ibn ʿUmar, and Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī from Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh, and al-Ṭabarānī with his chain from Ṣāliḥ, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ ؓ, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from Yazīd b. Rūmān, and Ibn Isḥāq from ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—may God Almighty have mercy on them: that the Messenger of God ﷺ obtained in the expedition against Banū Muḥārib and Banū Thaʿlabah a slave called Yasār. The Messenger of God ﷺ saw him performing prayer well, so he freed him and sent him among his milch-camels that used to graze in the area of al-Ḥimā. Then a group of people came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and in the ḥadīth of Anas in al-Bukhārī's book on Jihād and on blood money, eight men from ʿUkl and ʿUraynah; and according to Ibn Jarīr and Abū ʿAwāna they were four from ʿUraynah and three from ʿUkl, so the eighth was not from the two tribes, and thus was not ascribed. They came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and spoke words of Islam. In one version: they pledged allegiance to him upon Islam, and they were suffering from illness. According to Abū ʿAwāna they were severely emaciated, very yellow, and their bellies were swollen. They said: O Messenger of God, shelter us and feed us. They were among the people of the ṣuffah. When they recovered, they found the climate of Madinah disagreeable—in one wording—they found Madinah unhealthy. According to Ibn Isḥāq, they found it insalubrious and their spleens enlarged. In one version: the mūm—that is, the birsim—broke out in Madinah, and they said: “This pain has appeared, and Madinah is unhealthy. We were people of milk and not people of cultivated land, so send us with some messengers.” He said: “I find nothing for you except that you join the milch-camels.” In one version: “Yes, for us, so go out among them.” In one version: “He ordered them to join the shepherds of Fayfāʾ al-Khabār.” In one version: “The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered for them some milch-camels.” In one version: “The Messenger of God ﷺ permitted them to go to the camels of the zakāh, to drink their milk and urine.” So they went out and drank their milk and urine. When they became healthy, their bodies returned to them, and their bellies flattened, they disbelieved after their Islam, attacked the milch-camels, and drove them away. The freedman of the Messenger of God ﷺ, Yasār, caught up with them along with a group of men. He fought them, and they cut off his hands and feet and thrust thorns into his tongue and eyes until he died. In the version of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb from Anas in Muslim: “Then they turned upon the shepherds and killed them,” in the plural form. Similar to it is from Ibn Ḥibbān from the narration of Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd from Anas, and they went off with the herd. In one wording: the cry for help is in Abū ʿAwāna: they killed the two shepherds, and the other one came and said: “They have killed my companion and gone off with the camels.” According to Muḥammad b. ʿUmar: a woman of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf came on her donkey and passed by Yasār under a tree. When she saw him and passed by him and he had died, she returned to her people and told them the news. They went out until they brought Yasār to Qubāʾ dead. In Muslim: “With the Messenger of God ﷺ there were young men of the Anṣār, nearly twenty, and he sent them.” In one version: “The Messenger of God ﷺ sent twenty horsemen in pursuit of them; among those named were: Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ as in Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and Abū Rihm and Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī, Buraydah b. al-Ḥuṣayb, Rāfiʿ b. Makīth and his brother Jundub, Bilāl b. al-Ḥārith, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf al-Muzanī, Juʿāl b. Surāqah al-Thaʿlabī, and Suwayd b. Ṣakhr al-Juhanī—and these were from the Emigrants. It is possible that those whom Muḥammad b. ʿUmar did not name were from the Anṣār, so the word Anṣār was used in the narration by predominance, or the whole group was called Anṣār in the broader sense. He appointed over them Kurz b. Jābir al-Fihrī. Al-Ṭabarānī and others narrated from the ḥadīth of Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī ؓ that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him in pursuit of them, but its chain is weak. It is known that Jarīr's arrival was delayed from this time by about four years. He sent with them a tracker to follow their traces, and he supplicated against them saying: “Blind the path from them, and make it narrower for them than the hide of a camel.” God then blinded the ways from them, and they were overtaken that day and seized. When the day had risen, they were brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Kurz and his companions went out in pursuit of them until night overtook them. They spent the night at al-Ḥarrah, then morning came and they did not know which way they had gone. Then a woman carrying a camel's shoulder came by, and they seized her and said: What is this? She said: I passed by a people who had slaughtered a camel and gave me this shoulder. They are in that desert; if you reach it, you will see their smoke. They traveled until they came upon them just as they had finished their meal. They asked them to surrender, and they all surrendered; not one of them escaped. They bound them and mounted them behind on the horses until they came to Madinah, and found the Messenger of God ﷺ at al-Raghābah. Then they brought them out toward the Messenger of God ﷺ. Anas said, as in Ibn ʿUmar: I went out running in their tracks with the boys until the Messenger of God ﷺ met them at al-Raghābah, at the meeting place of the flood channels. He ordered nails to be heated, and he branded their eyes with them. In one version: he nailed them. In one version: he nailed their eyes. Anas said, as in Muslim: “The Prophet ﷺ only gouged the eyes of those people because they had gouged the eyes of the shepherds.” In one version: “They were brought, and he cut off their hands and feet on opposite sides, gouged their eyes, and left them in the ḥarrah until they died.” In one version: “Their eyes were nailed, and they were thrown into the ḥarrah, asking for water but not given any.” Anas said: “I saw one of them biting the ground with his mouth from thirst.” In one version: “to find its coolness because of the heat and hardship he suffered, until they died, and he did not cauterize them.” Abū Qilābah said: “These people killed, stole, disbelieved after their Islam, and waged war against God and His Messenger.” Ibn Sīrīn said: This story of the ʿUraynīs was before the prescribed punishments were revealed. According to Ibn ʿAwāna from Ibn ʿAqīl from Anas, he crucified two and gouged the eyes of two. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: Thus he mentioned only six; if this is preserved, their punishment was distributed among them. Then God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: The recompense of those who wage war against God and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is only that they be killed or crucified or their hands and feet be cut off on opposite sides or they be banished from the land. That is a disgrace for them in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment [al-Māʾidah 33]. The Messenger of God ﷺ never gouged an eye after that, nor cut a tongue, nor exceeded cutting off hand and foot; and the Messenger of God ﷺ never sent out an expedition after that without forbidding them from mutilation. After that he used to urge charity and forbid mutilation. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd said: The milch-camels were fifteen, and they went off with al-Ḥinnāʾ among them.
