✧ The time of the raid in the expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī ؓ to Banū al-Mulawwaḥ at al-Kadīd in Ṣafar of the year eight. The account of the raid of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī against Banū al-Mulawwaḥ [The affair of Ibn al-Barṣāʾ] And part of its account is that Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me from Muslim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khubayb al-Juhanī, from al-Mundhir, from Jundab b. Makīth al-Juhanī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kalbī, Kalb b. ʿAwf b. Layth, in an expedition in which I was present, and ordered him to launch a raid against Banū al-Mulawwaḥ, who were at al-Kadīd. We set out until, when we were at Qudayd, we encountered al-Ḥārith b. Mālik, who is Ibn al-Barṣāʾ al-Laythī, and we seized him. He said: 'I have come seeking Islam; I did not come out except to the Messenger of God ﷺ.' We said to him: 'If you are a Muslim, binding you for a night will not harm you, and if you are otherwise, we will have secured ourselves from you.' So we bound him tightly, then left one of our companions, a black man, to guard him, and we said to him: 'If he struggles with you, cut off his head.' [The trial of Ibn Makīth in this raid] He said: Then we traveled until we came to al-Kadīd at sunset, and we were on one side of the valley. My companions sent me as a lookout for them, so I went out until I came to a hill overlooking the encampment, and I leaned against it, then climbed to its top. I looked at the encampment, and by God, while I was lying flat on the hill, a man from among them came out of his tent and said to his wife: 'I see a black shape on the hill that I did not see at the beginning of my day. Look at your vessels to see if you are missing anything from them, lest the dogs have dragged some of them away.' He said: She looked and said: 'No, by God, I am not missing anything.' He said: 'Hand me my bow and two arrows.' She handed them to him. He said: He shot an arrow, and by God it did not miss my side. I pulled it out and put it aside, and remained fixed in my place. He said: Then he shot the other, and placed it in my shoulder. I pulled it out and put it aside, and remained fixed in my place. He said to his wife: 'If it were a lookout for a people, he would have moved. My two arrows have surely struck him, may you have no father! When morning comes, seek the two arrows and take them, so the dogs do not chew them on me.' He said: Then he went inside. [The escape of the Muslims with the cattle] He said: We gave them respite until, when they had settled and slept, and it was the time before dawn, we launched the raid on them. He said: We killed, and drove off the cattle, and the cry of the people went out. A great crowd came upon us, which we could not withstand, and we went on with the cattle. We passed by Ibn al-Barṣāʾ and his guard, and we carried them both with us. He said: The people caught up with us until they drew near to us. He said: There was nothing between us and them except the valley of Qudayd. Then God sent the valley with a flood from wherever He willed, Blessed and Exalted is He, without any cloud that we saw or rain. It came with something that no one had strength against, and no one could cross it. So they stopped, watching us, while we were driving their cattle. Not a man among them could cross over to us, and we were driving them swiftly, until we outdistanced them, and they could not pursue us. [The watchword of the Muslims in this raid] He said: Then we brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: A man from Aslam narrated to me, from a man among them, that the watchword of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ that night was: 'Amit! Amit!' (Kill! Kill!). A poet among the Muslims said while driving them: Abū al-Qāsim refused that you be unmarried, in a place of abundant water whose plants are tangled, Yellow its tops like the color of gilt. Ibn Hishām said: It is also transmitted: 'like the color of gold.' Muḥammad b. ʿUmar narrated from Ḥamzah b. ʿAmr al-Aslamī, who said: I was with them, and we were some ten men. In al-Bidāyah it is transmitted from al-Wāqidī that he mentioned this story with another chain and said in it: And there were with him one hundred and thirty men from the Companions. And al-Wāqidī mentioned that in another expedition of Ghālib other than this one.
