Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ When Joseph's innocence became clear to the king and he saw his trustworthiness, he said: Bring him to me, I will choose him for myself [12:54]. When the messenger came to him, he went out with him and prayed for the people of the prison and wrote on its door: This is the grave of the living, the house of sorrows, the trial of friends, and the gloating of enemies. Then he bathed, put on his clothes, and headed to the king. When he reached him and spoke with him, he said: Indeed, you are today with us established and trustworthy. Joseph said: Put me in charge of the storehouses of the land. So he employed him after a year; had he not said, Put me in charge of the storehouses of the land, he would have employed him immediately. He handed over all his storehouses after a year and made judgment to him and his ruling binding. He appointed him to the work of Qiṭfīr, and Qiṭfīr was dismissed. Qiṭfīr perished in those days, and the king married Joseph to Qiṭfīr's wife. When she entered upon him, he said: Is this not better than what you desired? She said: O truthful one, do not blame me, for I was a beautiful woman in a kingdom and worldly life, and my companion did not approach women, and you were among what your Lord gave you of beauty, so my soul overcame me. They claim that he found her a virgin and had intercourse with her, and she bore him Afrāyīm and Mīshā. To Afrāyīm was born Nūn, and to Nūn was born Yūshaʿ, the servant of Moses, and to Mīshā was born Moses, and he is a prophet before Moses b. ʿImrān. Other than this has been narrated concerning her, as will come. When Joseph was appointed, he commanded the people to sow, and they sowed. He commanded that the crops be left in their ears. The barren years entered, and the people suffered drought and the lands of Palestine became barren. Joseph sold food for dinars, dirhams, ornaments, and saddles. Then he sold them in the next year for male and female slaves. Then he sold them after that for horses and beasts. Then for livestock, cattle, and birds. Then for villages, estates, and houses. Then he sold them for themselves. There did not remain in Egypt any man, woman, child, or elder except that he became the property of Joseph. On the authority of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī, who said: A flood came [in Egypt] and uncovered a house of gold at the base of a mountain, upon which were two doors. In it was a woman wearing seven necklaces and seven bracelets, and beside her a rock on which was written: I am Shāddah bt. So-and-so the king. A famine struck us in the time of Joseph, so I offered a ṣāʿ of dirhams for a ṣāʿ of food, but I could not obtain it. Then I offered a ṣāʿ of dinars for a ṣāʿ of food, but I could not obtain it. Then I offered a ṣāʿ of pearls for a ṣāʿ of food, but I could not obtain it. So I took the pearls, crushed them, then drank them, and they increased my hunger. I died of hunger. Any woman who seeks worldly life after this, may God cause her to die my death; for I only died of hunger.
