The Farewell Pilgrimage
Translation
✧ Then he ﷺ set out returning to Madinah. When he was at al-Rawḥāʾ, he met a group of riders and greeted them, saying: "Who are the people?" They said, "The Muslims. And who are the people?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ." A woman raised a young boy of hers from a litter and said, "O Messenger of Allah, does this one have a ḥajj?" He said, "Yes, and you have a reward." When he reached Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, he spent the night there until morning and prayed in the belly of the valley. I said: And he saw, while encamping at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah in the belly of the valley, it was said to him, "You are in a blessed expanse." When he saw Madinah, he said "Allāhu akbar" three times and said: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. We are returning, repentant, worshiping, prostrating, praising our Lord. He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." Whenever he returned from a ḥajj, an ʿumrah, or a military expedition and ascended a mountain pass or a high ground, he would say "Allāhu akbar" three times and say: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Ever-Living and does not die. In His hand is all good, and He has power over all things. We are returning, repentant, worshiping, prostrating, praising our Lord. Allah fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." "O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, the gloom of the return, and an evil sight in family, wealth, and children. O Allah, bring us by You to a good arrival that conveys to good with forgiveness from You and good pleasure." When he camped at al-Muʿarras, he forbade going to wives at night. Two men went to their wives, and each of them found what he disliked. He made his camel kneel at al-Baṭḥāʾ. Whenever he went out for ḥajj, he took the route by the tree, and whenever he returned from Makkah, he entered Madinah from Muʿarras al-Abṭaḥ, and his resting place was in the belly of the valley, and he spent most of the night there. A precious benefit: therein is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried with him some water from Zamzam. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī said: Abū Kurayb narrated to us; Khallād b. Yazīd al-Juʿfī narrated to us; Zuhayr b. Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that she used to carry water from Zamzam and reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to carry it. Then he said: This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth; we know it only through this route.
