The Farewell Pilgrimage

Translation

✧ His ﷺ putting on his clothes and applying perfume after stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah ) Ibn Saʿd said: He obtained perfume after shaving, and put on the shirt, and the people exited ihrām. Al-Nasāʾī narrated from the ḥadīth of Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: I perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for his ihrām when he entered ihrām, and for his exiting ihrām after he stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah before he circumambulated the House. And Sufyān al-Thawrī said, from Salamah b. Kuhayl, from al-Ḥasan al-ʿUranī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that he said: When you stone the jamrah, you have exited from everything that was forbidden upon you except women, until you circumambulate the House. A man said: And perfume, O Abū al-ʿAbbās? He said to him: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smearing his head with musk; is it perfume or not?! And Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: Abū ʿUbaydah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Zamʿah narrated to me, from his father and his mother Zaynab bt. Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah, who said: The night in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his rounds was the night of the sacrifice, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with me. Wahb b. Zamʿah and a man from the family of Abū Umayyah entered, both wearing shirts. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "Have you two performed the ifāḍah?" They said: No. He said: "Remove your two shirts." So they removed them. Wahb said to him: Why, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "This is a day in which a concession has been given to you. When you stone the jamrah and sacrifice your hady, if you have any, then you have exited from everything that was forbidden to you except women, until you circumambulate the House. And when you enter the evening and have not performed the ifāḍah, you become in ihrām as you were at first, until you circumambulate the House." And there he was asked about one who shaved before stoning and about one who slaughtered before stoning, and he said: "No harm." ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr said: I did not see him ﷺ asked about anything on that day except that he said: "Do it and no harm." Ibn ʿAbbās said: He ﷺ was asked about slaughtering, shaving, stoning, and putting things earlier or later, and he said: "No harm." And Usāmah b. Sharīk said: I went out with the Prophet ﷺ as a pilgrim, and the people would come to him. Someone would say: O Messenger of Allah, I performed saʿy before I circumambulated, or I put something earlier, or I delayed something, and he would say: "No harm, no harm, except upon a man who borrows the honor of a Muslim man while he is an oppressor; that is the one who sins and perishes." And his saying: I performed saʿy before I circumambulated in this ḥadīth is not preserved. What is preserved is putting stoning, sacrificing, and shaving, some before others. And he sent ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī, and it is said: Kaʿb b. Mālik, to call out among the people at Minā that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "These are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah." I say: And his caller called out at Minā that these are days of eating, drinking, and marriage; Ibn Saʿd mentioned it. So the Muslims refrained from fasting except one who is prevented from completing the ḥajj or one performing tamattuʿ combining ʿumrah with ḥajj, for the concession from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is that they may fast the days of Minā, and Allah Almighty knows best.
