The Farewell Pilgrimage

Translation

✧ He addressed the people before the prayer, mounted on his riding camel, a mighty address. I say: He was standing in the two stirrups—as in Abū Dāwūd—from al-ʿAddāʾ b. Khālid ؓ. The text of the address, after praise of God and eulogy of Him, [is]: “O people, your blood and your property are forbidden to you until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours, in this land of yours. You shall meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. I have conveyed. Whoever holds a trust, let him return it to the one who entrusted it to him. Behold, every matter of the Age of Ignorance is abolished, placed beneath my two feet. The first of your blood I abolish”—and in one narration: “The first blood I abolish of our blood is the blood of Rabīʿah”—and in another narration: “the blood of Ibn Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who had been given to fosterage among Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, and Hudhayl killed him.” In Ibn Isḥāq and al-Nasāʾī: “among Banū Layth, and Hudhayl killed him; it is the first with which I begin of the blood of the Age of Ignorance. Every usury is abolished, and you have your principal sums: you do not wrong and you are not wronged. God has decreed that there is no usury. The first usury I abolish is the usury of al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; it is abolished, all of it. Now then, O people: Satan has despaired of ever being worshipped in this land of yours, but if he can gain a foothold in anything besides that, he would be content with the contemptible of your deeds, so beware of him for your religion. O people, the postponement [of sacred months] is an increase in unbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray; they make it lawful one year and unlawful another year, to conform to the number that God has made sacred, and they make lawful what God has forbidden and forbid what God has made lawful. Time has completed its cycle as on the day He created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months”—and in one narration: “The number of months with God is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and al-Muḥarram—and Rajab Muḍar, which is between Jumādā and Shaʿbān.” “Now then, O people: fear God and enjoin good treatment of women, for they are captives in your hands; they possess nothing for themselves. You have taken them only as a trust from God and made their private parts lawful by the word of God”—and in one narration: “by the Book of God. You have rights over them, and they have rights over you. Over them you have the right that they should not allow anyone you dislike to tread your beds, and over them is the right that they should not commit clear indecency. If they do, God has permitted you to shun them in the beds and to strike them with a blow that is not severe. If they desist, then they have from you their provision and clothing with kindness. So understand my words, O people, for I have conveyed. I have left among you what you will never go astray after me if you hold fast to it: two matters”—and in one narration: “a clear matter: the Book of God, mighty and glorious, and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ.” “O people, hear my words and understand them. Know that every Muslim is a brother to a Muslim”—and in one narration: “the brother of the Muslim, and the Muslims are brothers. It is not lawful for a man from his brother except what he gives him willingly. So do not wrong yourselves. Know that hearts do not harbor rancor over three things: sincerity of action for God, mighty and glorious; sincere counsel to those in authority; and cleaving to the community of the Muslims, for their supplication encompasses them from behind. Whoever has this world as his intention, God puts poverty before his eyes and scatters his affairs, and nothing of it comes to him except what is decreed for him. Whoever has the Hereafter as his intention, God puts richness in his heart and suffices him in his affairs, and this world comes to him submissively. May God have mercy on a man who hears my words until he conveys them to another, for many a bearer of understanding is not a jurist, and many a bearer of understanding conveys it to one more learned than he. Your slaves, your slaves: feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you wear. If one commits a sin you do not wish to forgive, then sell the servants of God and do not punish them. I enjoin you to be good to the neighbor”—until he repeated it much; so we said, “He will command inheritance for him.” “O people: God has given every possessor of a right his right. No bequest to an heir is permissible. The child belongs to the bed, and the stone is for the adulterer. Whoever claims descent from other than his father or takes as patrons other than his masters, upon him is the curse of God, the angels, and all people. God will not accept from him any compensation or equivalent. The loan is to be returned, the gift is to be repaid, the debt is to be settled, and the guarantor is liable. Now then: the people of polytheism and idols used to press on from here at sunset until the sun was on the mountain tops like the turbans of men on their heads. Our ritual is different from their ritual. They used to press on from al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām at sunrise until the sun was on the mountain tops like the turbans of men on their heads, and they would say: ‘Rise, Thabīr, that we may hasten.’ But God delayed this and advanced that—meaning He advanced Muzdalifah before sunrise and delayed ʿArafah until the sun sets. We do not press on from ʿArafah until the sun sets, and we press on from Muzdalifah until the sun rises. Our ritual is different from the ritual of idolatry and polytheism.” I say: In the ḥadīth of al-Miswar b. Makhramah ؓ he said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us at ʿArafāt. He praised God and eulogized Him, then said: ‘Now then: the people of polytheism and idols used to press on from this place when the sun was on the mountain tops, as if they were the turbans of men on their faces. We press on after it sets. They used to press on from al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām when the sun was spread out.’” Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it with the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ. “And you will be asked about me. What will you say?” They said: “We bear witness that you have conveyed, discharged, and counselled.” He raised his forefinger to the sky and pointed it at the people: “O God, bear witness! O God, bear witness! O God, bear witness!” three times. I say: Al-Bayhaqī narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that the Messenger of God ﷺ addressed at ʿArafāt. When he said, “Labbayka, O God, labbayk,” he said, “Verily the good is the good of the Hereafter.” [The name of the one who shouted out the Messenger’s words and repeated them] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me from his father ʿAbbād, who said: “The man who would shout out to the people what the Messenger of God ﷺ said while he was at ʿArafāt was Rabīʿah b. Umayyah b. Khalaf.” He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ would say to him: ‘Say: O people, the Messenger of God ﷺ says: Do you know which month this is?’ So he would say it to them, and they would say: ‘The sacred month.’ Then he would say: ‘Say to them: God has forbidden to you your blood and your property until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this month of yours.’ Then he would say: ‘Say: O people, the Messenger of God ﷺ says: Do you know which land this is?’ He said: ‘So he would shout it out.’ He said: ‘They would say: The sacred land.’ He said: ‘Then he would say: Say to them: God has forbidden to you your blood and your property until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this land of yours.’ He said: ‘Then he would say: Say: O people, the Messenger of God ﷺ says: Do you know which day this is?’ He said: ‘So he would say it to them. They would say: The day of the greater pilgrimage.’ He said: ‘Then he would say: Say to them: God has forbidden to you your blood and your property until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this day of yours.’”
