The Farewell Pilgrimage
Translation
✧ Mention of his ﷺ halting at al-ʿAraj: His camel-litter that was shared between him and Abū Bakr went missing. Then he ﷺ traveled on until he halted at al-ʿAraj. His camel-litter and Abū Bakr's camel-litter were one, and it was with a servant-boy belonging to Abū Bakr. The Messenger of God ﷺ sat down, with Abū Bakr at one side of him and ʿĀʾishah at his other side, and Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr at his side, while Abū Bakr waited for the servant-boy to appear. He appeared without the camel. He said, "Where is your camel?" He said, "I lost it last night." Abū Bakr—and he had a sharp temper—said, "One camel, and you lose it?" He began striking the boy with a whip, while the Messenger of God ﷺ smiled and said, "Look at this man in iḥrām, what he is doing?" The Messenger of God ﷺ did no more than say that and smile. Abū Dāwūd entitled this story "Chapter: The Pilgrim in Iḥrām Disciplining." I say: It was previously mentioned that the Messenger of God ﷺ performed the pilgrimage on a mount, and there was a camel-litter. Al-Muḥibb al-Ṭabarī said: It is possible that part of the litter was on it, and part of the litter was with Abū Bakr's litter ؓ. When the family of Faḍālah al-Aslamī learned that the Messenger of God's ﷺ litter had gone astray, they carried a large bowl of ḥays to him and brought it until they placed it before the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ began to say, "Come, O Abū Bakr, for God Almighty has brought better food." Abū Bakr kept being angry at the boy, so the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, "Take it easy, O Abū Bakr, for the matter is not in your hands, nor in ours with you. The boy was eager not to lose his camel, and this is a replacement for what was with him." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ ate, along with his family, and Abū Bakr and those with him ate until they were full. Then Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal ؓ came forward; he was at the rear of the people, and the camel was with him, carrying the litter. He came until he made it kneel at the door of the Messenger of God's ﷺ dwelling. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Abū Bakr, "Your baggage?" He said, "I missed nothing except a drinking bowl from which we used to drink." The boy said, "This bowl is with me." Abū Bakr said to Ṣafwān, "May God fulfill the trust through you." Saʿd b. ʿUbādah and his son Qays ؓ came, and with them was a camel-litter carrying provisions, heading for the Messenger of God ﷺ. They found the Messenger of God ﷺ standing at the door of his dwelling, God—Mighty and Majestic—having returned his litter to him. Saʿd said, "O Messenger of God, it reached us that your litter went astray this morning, and here is a litter in its place." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "God has brought our litter, so return with your litter, may God bless you both."
