Arrival of the delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah with Musaylimah the liar, and mention of the false prophets
Translation
✧ The arrival of the delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah with Musaylimah the liar to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ He said in Zād al-Maʿād: [Ibn Isḥāq said: A delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among them Musaylimah b. Ḥabīb the liar.] Their lodging was in the house of a woman of the Anṣār from Banū al-Najjār. They brought Musaylimah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, covering him with garments, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his companions, holding in his hand a palm-stalk of the leaves of a date-palm. When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while they were covering him with the garments, he spoke to him and asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "If you asked me for this palm-stalk that is in my hand, I would not give it to you." Ibn Isḥāq said: A shaykh from the people of al-Yamāmah from Banū Ḥanīfah told me that his account was other than this. He claimed that the delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and left Musaylimah behind at their baggage. When they accepted Islam, they mentioned his place and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have left behind a companion of ours at our baggage and our mounts, guarding them for us. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for him the like of what he ordered for the people, and said: "Indeed, he is not the worst of you in station," meaning his guarding the property of his companions. [That is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ meant.] He said: Then they departed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and brought to him what he had given him. When they reached al-Yamāmah, the enemy of Allah apostatized and claimed prophethood and said: I have been made a partner in the affair with him. Did he not say to you when you mentioned me to him: "Indeed, he is not the worst of you in station"? That was only because he knew that I had been made a partner in the affair with him. Then he began to utter rhymed sayings to them, saying among what he said, in imitation of the Qurʾān: God has indeed blessed the pregnant woman; He brought forth from her a living soul that walks, from between a membrane and a bowel. He removed the prayer from them, and made lawful for them wine and fornication, while he nevertheless bore witness that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a prophet. So Banū Ḥanīfah unanimously agreed with him on that. Ibn Isḥāq said: He had written to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "From Musaylimah the messenger of Allah to Muḥammad the messenger of Allah: Now then, I have been made a partner in the affair with you, and we have half of the affair, and Quraysh is not a people who act justly." His messenger came to him with this letter. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to him: "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate: From Muḥammad the messenger of Allah to Musaylimah the liar: Peace be upon him who follows guidance. Now then, the earth belongs to Allah; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills of His servants, and the outcome is for the God-fearing." That was at the end of the year 10. Ibn Isḥāq said: Saʿd b. Ṭāriq narrated to me from Salamah b. Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the two messengers of Musaylimah the liar came to him with his letter, saying to them: "And do you two say the like of what he says?" They said: Yes. He said: "Indeed, by Allah, were it not that messengers are not killed, I would strike your necks." Abū Dāwūd and al-Ṭayālisī narrated in his Musnad: Ibn al-Nawwāḥah and Ibn Uthāl came as two messengers of Musaylimah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to them: "Do you two bear witness that I am the messenger of Allah?" They said: We bear witness that Musaylimah is the messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I believe in Allah and His messengers. If I were to kill a messenger, I would kill you two." ʿAbd Allāh [b. Masʿūd] said: Thus the practice became that messengers are not killed. In al-Bukhārī from Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī, he said: When the Prophet ﷺ was sent and we heard of him, we joined Musaylimah the liar at al-Nār. We used to worship stone in the Jāhiliyyah: if we found a stone that was better than it, we threw that one away and took it, and if we did not find a stone, we collected a handful of dust, then brought sheep and milked them over it, then circumambulated it. When Rajab entered, we said: "The remover of spearheads has come," so we did not leave an arrow with an iron head or iron in a spear but removed it and threw it away. I say: In the two Ṣaḥīḥs from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ, he said: Musaylimah the liar came during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he kept saying: If Muḥammad makes the affair mine after him, I will follow him. He had come with many people of his tribe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached him, with Thābit b. Qays b. Shammās with him, and in the hand of the Prophet ﷺ was a piece of a palm branch, until he stood before Musaylimah among his companions and said: "If you asked me for this piece, I would not give it to you, and you will not go beyond the decree of Allah concerning you. If you turn back, Allah will surely hamstring you. I see you as the one about whom I saw what I saw. This is Thābit b. Qays; he will answer you on my behalf." Then he turned away from him. Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ said: I asked about the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "I see you as the one about whom I saw what I saw," and Abū Hurayrah ؓ informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "While I was sleeping, I saw in my hands two bracelets of gold. Their matter concerned me, and it was revealed to me in the dream to blow on them. They flew away, and I interpreted them as two liars who would come after me: one was al-ʿAnsī, the chief of Ṣanʿāʾ, and the other was Musaylimah, the chief of al-Yamāmah." This is more correct than the preceding ḥadīth of Ibn Isḥāq. In the two Ṣaḥīḥs from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "While I was sleeping, I was brought the treasures of the earth, and two bracelets of gold were placed in my palm. They weighed heavily upon me, and it was revealed to me to blow on them. I blew on them and they went away, and I interpreted them as the two liars between whom I am: the chief of Ṣanʿāʾ and the chief of al-Yamāmah." Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: A delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among them Musaylimah b. Ḥabīb the liar. Ibn Hishām said: He is Musaylimah b. Thumāmah, and he is called Abū Thumāmah. Abū al-Qāsim al-Suhaylī said: He is Musaylimah b. Thumāmah b. Kabīr b. Ḥabīb b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Ḥārith b. Hiffān b. Dhuhl b. al-Duwal b. Ḥanīfah, and he is called Abū Thumāmah, and it was said Abū Hārūn. He had named himself al-Raḥmān, so he was called Raḥmān al-Yamāmah. His age when he was killed was one hundred and fifty years. He knew some forms of trickery, so he would insert an egg into a glass bottle, and he was the first to do that. He would clip a bird's wing and then join it, and he claimed that a gazelle would come to him from the mountain and he would milk its milk. I say: We will mention some of his story when mentioning his killing, may Allah curse him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Their lodging was in the house of Bint al-Ḥārith, a woman of the Anṣār, then of Banū al-Najjār. Some of our scholars from the people of al-Madīnah narrated to me that Banū Ḥanīfah brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, covering him with garments, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among his companions, with him a palm-stalk of the leaves of a date-palm, in its head small leaves. When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while they were covering him with the garments, he spoke to him and asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "If you asked me for this palm-stalk, I would not give it to you." Ibn Isḥāq said: A shaykh from Banū Ḥanīfah from the people of al-Yamāmah narrated to me that his account was other than this. He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for him the like of what he ordered for the people, and said: "Indeed, he is not the worst of you in station," that is, for guarding the property of his companions; that is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ meant. He said: Then they departed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and brought to Musaylimah what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given him. When they reached al-Yamāmah, the enemy of Allah apostatized and claimed prophethood and lied to them, saying: I have been made a partner in the affair with him. He said to his delegation who had been with him: Did he not say to you when you mentioned me to him: "Indeed, he is not the worst of you in station"? That was only because he knew that I had been made a partner in the affair with him. Then he began to utter rhymed sayings to them, saying among what he said, in imitation of the Qurʾān: God has indeed blessed the pregnant woman; He brought forth from her a living soul that walks, from between a membrane and a bowel. He made lawful for them wine and fornication, and removed the prayer from them, while he nevertheless bore witness that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a prophet. So Banū Ḥanīfah unanimously agreed with him on that. Ibn Isḥāq said: Allah knows best which of that was the case.
