Translation
✧ The Islam of Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Judhāmī [His Islam] Ibn Isḥāq said: Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Nāfirah al-Judhāmī, then al-Nufāthī, sent a messenger to the Messenger of God ﷺ with his acceptance of Islam, and he gifted him a white mule. Farwah was an agent of the Byzantines over the Arabs adjacent to them, and his residence was Muʿān and its surrounding land in Syria. [The Byzantines' imprisonment of him and his poetry in his prison] When news of his Islam reached the Byzantines, they sought him until they seized him and imprisoned him among them. He said while in his prison: Sulaymā came at night to my companions while the Byzantines were between the gate and al-Qirwān; the phantom turned aside and what it saw grieved it. I had resolved to sleep, but it made me weep; O eye, do not apply antimony after me. Sulmā, do not make a habit of coming; for you have known, Abū Kubayshah, that I am Among the mighty ones whose tongue is not restrained. If I perish, you will surely miss your brother; and if I remain, you will know my standing. I have gathered the finest that a youth can gather: generosity, courage, and eloquence. When the Byzantines resolved to crucify him at a spring of theirs called ʿAfrāʾ in Palestine, he said: Has news reached Sulmā that her husband is at the spring of ʿAfrāʾ, upon one of the mounts, On a she-camel whose dam no stallion mounted, with her extremities trimmed by sickles? [His killing] Al-Zuhrī Ibn Shihāb claimed that when they brought him forward to kill him, he said: Convey to the chiefs of the Muslims that I am at peace with my Lord, my bones and my standing. Then they struck his neck and crucified him at that spring, may God Almighty have mercy on him.
