Translation
✧ The arrival of ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib among people of Banū Zubayd ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib came to the Messenger of God ﷺ among people of Banū Zubayd, and he became Muslim. ʿAmr had said to Qays b. Makshūḥ al-Murādī, when the affair of the Messenger of God ﷺ reached them: O Qays, you are the chief of your people, and it has been mentioned to us that a man of Quraysh called Muḥammad has arisen in the Ḥijāz, saying that he is a prophet. Come with us to him so that we may learn his knowledge, for if he is a prophet as he says, it will not be hidden from you, and when we meet him we shall follow him; and if it is other than that, we shall know his knowledge. Qays refused him that, and deemed his opinion foolish. So ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib rode until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he became Muslim, believed him, and had faith in him. When that reached Qays b. Makshūḥ, he threatened ʿAmr and raged against him, and said: He has opposed me and abandoned my opinion. ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib said concerning that: I commanded you on the day of Dhū Ṣanʿāʾ a command whose right guidance was clear; I commanded you to fear God, and the good you would transgress. You went out of desires like a young donkey deceived by its peg. You wish for me on a horse upon which its lion sits; upon me is a coat of mail like a pool whose water a hard smooth rock has made clear. It repels the spear with bent point, its shafts deflected. Were you to meet me you would meet a lion with his mane upon him. You would meet a rough lion, coarse of paws, with prominent shoulder blades, who vies with the adversary; if an adversary seeks him, he overcomes him. Then he seizes him and lifts him, then casts him down and breaks him in two, then smites his brain and crushes him, then seizes him with his teeth and swallows him, oppressive of the snare in what his fangs and his hand have seized. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me: I commanded you on the day of Dhū Ṣanʿāʾ a command whose guidance was clear; I commanded you to fear God, to come to it and observe it; and I was like one whose young donkey's peg has deceived him concerning what is in it. He did not know the rest of it. [His apostasy and his poetry concerning that] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib stayed among his people of Banū Zubayd, over whom was Farwah b. Musayk. When the Messenger of God ﷺ died, ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib apostatized, and said when he apostatized: We found Farwah's kingship the worst kingship, a donkey that sniffed its nostril with a piece of hide; and when you saw Abū ʿUmayr, you saw filth and treachery. Ibn Hishām said: his saying "with a piece of hide" is from Abū ʿUbaydah. I say: Then he returned to Islam, and his Islam was good, and he witnessed many conquests in the days of al-Ṣiddīq and ʿUmar al-Fārūq ؓ, and he was among the famed brave men, the famous heroes, and the excellent poets. He died in the year twenty-one after witnessing the conquest of Nahāwand. It is said: rather he witnessed al-Qādisiyyah and was killed on that day. Abū ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Barr said: His coming to the Messenger of God ﷺ was in year nine. It is said: in year ten, according to what Ibn Isḥāq and al-Wāqidī mentioned. It has also been said that ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib did not come to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said concerning that: My soul is certain of the Prophet, even if I have not seen the Prophet with my own eyes; master of all the worlds, and the nearest of them to God when his station became clear. He brought us the Law from God, and he was the trusted one, aided therein. His judgment came after wisdom and light, and we were guided by its light from our blindness. We mounted the path when we mounted it anew, whether by our aversion or our consent. We worshipped God truly, and we had been worshipping idols in ignorance. We were united by him after being enemies, and we returned together as brothers. So upon him be peace, and submission from us, wherever we are in the lands, wherever he may be. If we have not seen the Prophet, yet we have followed his path in faith.
