Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations
فَصْلٌ فِي قُدُومِ وَفْدِ بَلِيٍّ وَقَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ وَفْدُ بَلِيٍّ فِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ مِنْ سَنَةِ تِسْعٍ، فَأَنْزَلَهُمْ رويفع بن ثابت البلوي عِنْدَهُ، وَقَدِمَ بِهِمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ قَوْمِي. فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مَرْحَبًا بِكَ وَبِقَوْمِكَ "، فَأَسْلَمُوا، وَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَاكُمْ لِلْإِسْلَامِ، فَكُلُّ مَنْ مَاتَ عَلَى غَيْرِ الْإِسْلَامِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ "، فَقَالَ لَهُ أبو الضبيب شَيْخُ الْوَفْدِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ لِي رَغْبَةً فِي الضِّيَافَةِ، فَهَلْ لِي فِي ذَلِكَ أَجْرٌ ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ، وَكُلُّ مَعْرُوفٍ صَنَعْتَهُ إِلَى غَنِيٍّ أَوْ فَقِيرٍ فَهُوَ صَدَقَةٌ ". قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ: مَا وَقْتُ الضِّيَافَةِ ؟ قَالَ: " ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ فَمَا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ صَدَقَةٌ، وَلَا يَحِلُّ لِلضَّيْفِ أَنْ يُقِيمَ عِنْدَكَ فَيُحْرِجَكَ " قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ: أَرَأَيْتَ الضَّالَّةَ مِنَ الْغَنَمِ أَجِدُهَا فِي الْفَلَاةِ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ ؟ قَالَ: هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ " قَالَ: فَالْبَعِيرَ ؟ قَالَ: " مَا لَكَ وَلَهُ؟ دَعْهُ حَتَّى يَجِدَهُ صَاحِبُهُ "، قَالَ رويفع: ثُمَّ قَامُوا فَرَجَعُوا إِلَى مَنْزِلِي، فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْتِي مَنْزِلِي يَحْمِلُ تَمْرًا فَقَالَ: " اسْتَعِنْ بِهَذَا التَّمْرِ "، وَكَانُوا يَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَمِنْ غَيْرِهِ، فَأَقَامُوا ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ وَدَّعُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَأَجَازَهُمْ وَرَجَعُوا إِلَى بِلَادِهِمْ ).
Translation
✧ Section on the arrival of the delegation of Balī The delegation of Balī arrived before him in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of year nine. Ruwayfiʿ b. Thābit al-Balawī lodged them at his place and brought them before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, “These are my people.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Welcome to you and to your people.” So they embraced Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, “Praise be to Allah, who guided you to Islam. Everyone who dies upon other than Islam is in the Fire.” Abū al-Ḍubayb, an elder of the delegation, said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, I have a desire for hospitality. Is there reward for me in that?” He said, “Yes, and every act of kindness you do toward a rich or poor person is charity.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the duration of hospitality?” He said, “Three days; whatever comes after that is charity, and it is not lawful for a guest to stay with you such that he causes you hardship.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about a stray sheep I find in the open land?” He said, “It is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf.” He said, “Then the stray camel?” He said, “What concern is it of yours? Leave it until its owner finds it.” Ruwayfiʿ said, “Then they arose and returned to my dwelling, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming to my dwelling carrying dates. He said, ‘Make use of these dates.’ They ate from them and from other food, stayed three days, then took leave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave them gifts and they returned to their lands.”
