Translation

✧ And in the ḥadīth of al-Shaʿbī: He said: When there reached me what the Messenger of God ﷺ was calling to of excellent morals and what had gathered to him of people, I set out until I came before the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah. I entered upon him while he was in his mosque, and with him were a woman and children, or a child. And he mentioned their closeness to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: So I knew that he was not like the kingdom of Kisrā nor Caesar. I greeted him, and he said, "Who is the man?" I said, "ʿAdī b. Ḥātim." The Messenger of God ﷺ rose and went off with me to his house. By God, as he was heading with me to it, a weak old woman met him and stopped him, and he stood for her a long while while she spoke to him about her need. I said to myself: By God, this is not a king. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went on with me until, when he entered his house, he took a cushion of tanned leather stuffed with palm fiber and pushed it to me, saying, "Sit on this." He said: I said, "Messenger of God, rather you sit on it." He said, "Rather you." So I sat on it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ sat on the ground. Then he said, "ʿAdī, I inform you that there is no god but God: is there any god but God? And I inform you that God, exalted is He, is greater: is there anything greater than God, mighty and majestic is He?" Then he said, "ʿAdī, submit and you will be safe." I said, "I am upon my religion." He said, "I know your religion better than you." I said, "You know my religion better than I?" He said, "Yes," saying it three times. "Are you not a Rakūsī?" I said, "Indeed." He said, "Do you not hold leadership over your people?" I said, "Indeed." He said, "Did you not used to take among your people the mirbāʿ?" I said, "Indeed, by God," and I knew that he was a sent prophet who knows what is unknown. He said, "That was not lawful for you in your religion." Then he said, "ʿAdī, perhaps what prevents you from entering this religion is that you have seen want among us. By God, wealth will soon overflow among them until no one is found to take it. And perhaps what prevents you from entering it is what you see of the great number of their enemies and the smallness of their number. By God, it will soon be that you hear of a woman departing from al-Qādisiyyah on her camel until she visits this House without fear." In another narration he said, "Have you seen al-Ḥīrah?" I said, "I have not seen it, but I know its location." He said, "A woman in a howdah will travel from al-Ḥīrah to circumambulate the House without protection, fearing no one but God, mighty and majestic is He, and the wolf for her sheep." He said: I said to myself: Then where are the raiders of Ṭayyiʾ who set the lands ablaze? He said, "Perhaps what prevents you from entering it is that you see kingship and authority among others. By God, it will soon be that you hear of the white palaces of the land of Babylon having been opened for them." And in another narration: "The treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz will surely be opened for them." I said: The treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz? He said: "The treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz." And in another narration: "If life lasts long for you, you will surely see a man go out with a handful of gold or silver seeking someone to accept it from him and finding no one to accept it from him. And one of you will surely meet God on the day he meets Him with no interpreter between him and Him. He will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and look to his left and see nothing but Hell. So guard against the Fire, even with half a date; and if you do not find half a date, then with a good word." ʿAdī ؓ said: So I submitted, and I saw the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ brighten. I saw the woman in the howdah travel from al-Kūfah until she circumambulated the House fearing none but God, mighty and majestic is He, and I was among those who opened the treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz. And if life lasts long for you, you will see what Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ said.
