Translation
✧ [Their shouting to the Messenger and the speech of ʿUṭārid] When the delegation of Banū Tamīm arrived, they were with them. When the delegation of Banū Tamīm entered the mosque, they called out to the Messenger of God ﷺ from behind his apartments: Come out to us, O Muḥammad. That shouting distressed the Messenger of God ﷺ, so he came out to them. They said: O Muḥammad, we have come to vie with you in boasting, so permit our poet and our orator. He said: I have permitted your orator, let him speak. ʿUṭārid b. Ḥājib stood and said: Praise be to God, who has over us favor and grace, and He is worthy of it; who made us kings, and granted us great wealth, through which we do good, and made us the mightiest people of the east and the most numerous in number and the most ready in equipment. Who among people is like us? Are we not the heads of the people and the possessors of their excellence? Whoever vies with us in boasting, let him recount the like of what we have recounted. If we wished, we would speak at length, but we refrain from excess in what God has given us, and we are known for that. I say this so that you may bring the like of our speech, and a matter surpassing our matter. Then he sat down. [The speech of Thābit in reply to ʿUṭārid] The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās, the brother of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj: Rise and answer the man in his speech. Thābit stood and said: Praise be to God, whose creation are the heavens and the earth, in which He decreed His command, and His knowledge encompasses His throne; nothing ever exists except from His bounty. Then it was by His power that He made us kings, and He chose from the best of His creation a Messenger, the noblest in lineage, the most truthful in speech, the most excellent in nobility. He sent down upon him His Book and entrusted him with His creation. He was God's choice among the worlds. Then he called the people to faith in him, and those who believed in the Messenger of God were the Emigrants from his people and his kinsmen, the noblest of people in lineage, the finest of people in faces, and the best of people in deeds. Then the first of creation to respond, and we responded to God when the Messenger of God ﷺ called us—we are the helpers of God and the ministers of His Messenger. We fight people until they believe in God. Whoever believes in God and His Messenger, his wealth and blood are protected from us; whoever disbelieves, we strive against him in God forever, and killing him is easy for us. I say this speech of mine and ask God's forgiveness for me and for the believing men and believing women. Peace be upon you.
