Translation

✧ What Has Been Reported Regarding the Arrival of the Thaqīf Delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Their Conversion The Thaqīf delegation came to the Prophet ﷺ in the month of Ramaḍān after his return ﷺ from Tabūk to Madinah. ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī ؓ had come to the Prophet ﷺ as a Muslim and had asked the Prophet ﷺ to return to his people to call them to Islam, but the Prophet ﷺ warned him and informed him that they would kill him. ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am dearer to them than their firstborn,” and in one narration, “than their sight.” He returned to them and called them to Islam, but they killed him. Among what he said when they struck him was: “An honor with which Allah has honored me, and a martyrdom that Allah has brought to me.” Then he asked them to bury him with the martyrs who were killed with the Prophet ﷺ. After the killing of ʿUrwah, Thaqīf remained for some months. Then they consulted among themselves and saw that they had no strength to fight the Arabs around them, who had pledged allegiance and embraced Islam. They agreed that a delegation from among them should come to the Prophet ﷺ. Six of them set out, among them ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, who was the youngest of the group in age but was the most learned in religious understanding among them. When the delegation came to the Prophet ﷺ, he lodged them in a tent on one side of the mosque and would come to them and speak with them. They asked him for certain things, among them that he leave their idol for them for a time, but the Prophet ﷺ refused. Then they asked him that its destruction not be by their own hands, and he granted them that. They also asked him to excuse them from prayer, and the Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no good in a religion that has no prayer in it.” They had asked him ﷺ for various things; he accepted some of them in order to win their hearts and rejected others. They embraced Islam on that basis, prayed, and fasted. Bilāl used to bring them their ifṭār and suḥūr to teach them the times for those. Then the Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ as their commander and enjoined him to make the prayer light, and he supplicated for him ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ sent al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah and Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb to them to destroy their idol. They carried out its destruction in full view of Thaqīf and took the gold and wealth that was in it. The Prophet ﷺ used it to pay a debt that was owed by the father of Abū Mulayḥ b. ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd, a debt that was upon his father. He also gave to Qārib b. al-Aswad to pay a debt that was upon his father, for which he himself was being pursued. The Prophet ﷺ gave it to him as a gift and because of kinship.
