The Expedition of Tabūk

Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentioned from Ibn Ukaymah al-Laythī, from the nephew of Abū Ruhm al-Ghifārī, that he heard Abū Ruhm Kulthūm b. al-Ḥuṣayn, who was one of the people of the tree, saying: I went on the expedition of Tabūk with the Messenger of God ﷺ. I traveled with him one night while we were at al-Akhḍar, and God cast drowsiness upon me. I kept waking up when my riding camel had drawn near the riding camel of the Prophet ﷺ, and its nearness to him startled me, for fear that I might strike his foot in the stirrup. I kept turning my camel away from him until sleep overcame me in part of the road, and my camel jostled his camel while his foot was in the stirrup. I did not wake except at his saying, "Ḥass." I said, "O Messenger of God, ask forgiveness for me." He said, "Move on." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ began asking me about those who had stayed behind from Banū Ghifār, and I informed him of them. While asking me, he said, "What did the company of the ruddy, tall, thick-bearded men—those with no hair on their faces—do?" I told him that they had stayed behind. He said, "And what did the company of the black, curly-haired, short men do?" He said: I said, "By God, I do not know these to be from among us." He said, "Indeed, those who have livestock at Shabakat Shadakh." Then I recalled them among Banū Ghifār but did not remember them, until I remembered that they were a group from Aslam who were allies among us. I said, "O Messenger of God, those are a group from Aslam who are allies among us." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "What prevented any of those, when he stayed behind, from carrying on one of his camels an active man in the way of God? The dearest of my people to me that they should stay behind from me are the Muhājirūn, the Anṣār, Ghifār, and Aslam."
