The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)

Translation

✧ [Poetry of Abū Thawāb in Satire of Quraysh] Abū Thawāb Zayd b. Ṣuḥār, one of the Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, said: Alā, has it come to you that Quraysh overcame Hawāzin, while events are bound by conditions? And we, O Quraysh, when we grew angry, from that anger there came fresh blood. And we, O Quraysh, when we grew angry, it was as if our noses had in them a snuff. So we have become ones whom Quraysh drive as merchandise, like the driving of a caravan which the Nabīṭ urge on. I am not one who, if asked to submit to humiliation, refuses to submit, nor am I eager to be soft toward them. Their flesh will be carried off in every mountain pass, and lines will be written on their ears. It is also related as al-khuṭūṭ, and this verse is in the narration of Abū Saʿd. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: Abū Thawāb Ziyād b. Thawāb. Khalaf al-Aḥmar recited to me his saying: “from that anger there came fresh blood,” and at its end a verse on the authority of other than Ibn Isḥāq. [Poetry of Ibn Wahb in reply to Ibn Abī Thawāb] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb, a man of the Banū Tamīm, then of the Banū Usayyid, answered him, saying: By God’s condition we strike whomever we meet, like the best of conditions you have seen. And we, O Hawāzin, when we meet, moisten the crowns of heads with fresh blood. With your gathered force and the gathered force of the Banū Qasiyy, we rub the chests like pounded leaves. We struck the nobles among you, and we inclined with killing among the separated and the mixed. Therewith the dazed one lies with his hands spread out, spewing death like a young camel gasping. And if Qays ʿAylān are angry, my snuff does not cease to rub their noses in the dust.
