Translation

✧ [ Poetry of Ḍamḍam on the Day of Ḥunayn ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḍamḍam b. al-Ḥārith b. Jusham b. ʿAbd b. Ḥabīb b. Mālik b. ʿAwf b. Yaqaẓah b. ʿUṣayyah al-Sulamī said on the day of Ḥunayn, when Thaqīf had struck Kinānah b. al-Ḥakam b. Khālid b. al-Sharīd, and he killed in retaliation for him Miḥjan and a cousin of his, both of Thaqīf: We brought the horses from no pasture to Jarash from the people of Zayyān and al-Fam We slay the cubs of lions and we seek the tyrants who were before us and had not been demolished If you boast of Ibn al-Sharīd, then I have left at Wajj a mourning after a mourning I requited them for Ibn al-Sharīd, and your protection deceived him, though he was not blameworthy Our spears reach men of Thaqīf and our swords wound them with every wound Ḍamḍam b. al-Ḥārith also said: Convey to those with wives a sign: let not a woman with a veil ever feel safe from time After she said to the neighbor of her house: I would have, had the raiders stayed at the abode When she saw a man whose color was scorched by the heat of summer, and the bones were bare Bones protruding, you see him at the end of his night clad in his coat of mail for a raid For I do not cease to be on the saddle of a sturdy, sleek she-camel that makes my loincloth reach the highlands One day following the spoils, and at another time it was recorded as a struggle alongside the Anṣār And the pride of every thicket I have destroyed, slowly, while it lingers, and of every soft ground So that I may change what is in it of need, and she wishes that I would not return, so I went forth
