✧ Mention of the Poetry Recited About This Expedition ʿAbbās b. Mirdās al-Sulamī said, mentioning Qārib b. al-Aswad and his escape from his father’s kin, and Dhū al-Khimār and his detaining his people for death: Alā, from one who conveys to Ghaylān from me—and I think the informed one will come to him— And ʿUrwah, indeed he only sent back a reply And a saying other than your saying, easy: That Muḥammad is a servant, a messenger, To a Lord who does not err and is not unjust. We found him a prophet like Mūsā, So every youth who vies with him is surpassed. And evil is the affair of the Banū Qasiyy At Wajj when matters are apportioned. They lost their affair, and for every people Is a commander, and the turns of fate may revolve. So we came as lions of thickets against them— God’s armies, exposed, marching, Heading for the gathering, the gathering of Banū Qasiyy, In rage by which we nearly fly. I swear, had they stayed, we would have marched Against them with the armies, and they would not have raided. So we were the lions of Layyah, then until We made it permissible, and the vultures submitted. And a day that was before, at Ḥunayn, It ceased while blood surged in it. Among the days you have not heard of like a day, Nor have men of renown heard of it. We killed in the dust the Banū Ḥaṭīṭ Upon their banners, while the horses were in ranks. Dhū al-Khimār was not a chief of a people Who had reason to punish or rebuke. He made them stand on the path of fates, While matters had become clear to those who saw them. So whoever of them escaped fled choking, And many of them were slain. The brother of slackness does not avail in affairs, Nor the anxious, ill-tempered one who withholds. He was given safety, then they made him master of Their affairs, and the falcons escaped. The Banū ʿAwf, swift horses surge with them— Fresh clover and barley are base to them. Were it not for Qārib and his father’s kin, The sown fields and fortresses would have been divided. But they made leadership universal Over a blessed right hand to which the adviser pointed. They obeyed Qārib, though they had ancestors And forbearance leading to might. If they are guided to Islam, they will wrap The noses of the people as long as the night-talker talks. And if they do not submit, they are a call To war with God, with no helper for them. How many of Banū Saʿd and Ḥarb did she relate To the clan of Banū Ghaziyyah, a mighty host? It is as if the Banū Muʿāwiyah b. Bakr, Toward Islam, are bleating sheep that low. So we said: Submit! We are your brothers, And breasts have been freed from the blood-feud. It is as if the people, when they came to us, After peace, were one-eyed from hatred. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said: Truly I, by the charging horses on the day of a gathering, And by what the Messenger recited of the Book, Indeed I loved what Thaqīf met By the side of the mountain pass yesterday of torment. They are the head of the enemy among the people of Najd, So their killing is sweeter than wine. We routed the gathering, the gathering of Banū Qasiyy, And she related their kneeling to the Banū Riʾāb. And a company of Hilāl I left At Awṭās rolling in the dust. Were it not for Qayn who gathered Banū Kilāb, Their women would have risen while the dust was settling. We spurred the horses among them between Bass To the watering places, descending swiftly. With a numerous host, the Messenger of God among them, His battalion presenting itself for striking. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: O Seal of the Prophets, you are sent With the truth; every guidance of the way is your guidance. Indeed God built love for you In His creation, and named you Muḥammad. Indeed those who fulfilled what you covenanted with them Are an army over which you sent al-Ḍaḥḥāk— A man in whom the practice of arms is such that When the enemy surrounded him, he seemed to see you. He charges the near of kin, and only Seeks the pleasure of the Most Merciful, then your pleasure. O your prophet, I have seen one forced Beneath the dust-cloud smashing polytheism— At length embracing with two hands, and at times He feasts the skulls with a sharp-cutting sword. [With it the heads of the champions are covered, and if you saw What she witnessed from him, it would be your healing.] And the Banū Sulaym hasten before him, Striking and thrusting at the enemy in close succession. They walk beneath his banner, as if they were Lions of the thicket that intended then to grapple. They hope for no kinship from a relative Except through obedience to their Lord and your love. These are our witnessed scenes that were ours, Well-known, and our protector is your protector. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: Majdal has become effaced of its people, then Mutāliʿ, Then Muṭlā of Urayk has become empty, then al-Maṣāniʿ— Abodes of ours, O Jamal, when our life was Ample, and the turns of time gathered for the tribe. Ḥubaybah, whom the estrangement of distance turned away, To dwell apart—is there any past of life that returns? If you follow the disbelievers, not being blamed, Then I am a minister and follower of the Prophet. The best delegation I knew called us to him: Khuzaymah, and al-Murrār among them, and Wāsiʿ. So we came with a thousand of Sulaym upon whom Was armor of the weave of David, splendid. We pledge allegiance to him between al-Akhshabayn, and indeed It is God’s hand between al-Akhshabayn we pledge. So we trod with the rightly guided one through Makkah by force With our swords, while the dust was settling and rising. Openly, while the horses’ backs were covered With hot water and a vessel of heart’s blood that has settled. And on the day of Ḥunayn, when Hawāzin marched Against us and the ribs tightened upon souls, We stood firm with al-Ḍaḥḥāk; the clash Of the enemies among them and the battles did not unsettle us. Before the Messenger of God, over us fluttered A banner like a child’s spinning top of cloud, gleaming— On the evening when Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān sought refuge With the sword of the Messenger of God while death was imminent. We defend our brother against our brother, and if we saw A way out, we would be the nearest kin to follow. But the religion of God is the religion of Muḥammad; We are pleased with it—in it are guidance and laws. He established our affair after misguidance, And there is no repeller of an affair God has decreed. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: What is the matter with your eye that has a restless, sleepless speck, Like a colocynth fruit over which the eyelid lowers? An eye to which wakefulness returns from its grief, So water floods it at times and flows down, As if it were strung pearls before a stringer From which she cuts the thread, so it is severed. How far is the abode of one whose affection you hope for, And one before whom lie al-Ṣammān then al-Ḥafr. Leave what has passed of the time of youth, for youth Has departed and old age and thinning hair have visited. And remember the trials of Sulaym in their stations— In Sulaym there is glory for the people of pride: A people who helped the Most Merciful and followed The religion of the Messenger while people’s affairs were tangled. They do not plant palm shoots among themselves, Nor do cattle converse in their winter camp— Only swift horses like eagles, kept near, In an enclosure around which are dangers and dust. Kafāf and ʿAwf are called on its sides, And the tribe of Dhakwān, with no deviation and no vexation— The ones who strike the armies of polytheism exposed In the belly of Makkah while souls race forth, Until we raised up, and their slain were as if Palm trees uprooted on the surface of the plain. And we, on the day of Ḥunayn, our witnessed scene was Might for the religion, and stored with God. When death rode with green linings, And the horses were parted by rising, murky dust, Beneath the banner with al-Ḍaḥḥāk, he puts us forward, As the lion walks in his thickets, the wary one, In a narrow choke of the war’s milling, whose chest Nearly makes the sun and the moon set. We stood firm at Awṭās; our spearheads Are for God—you help whom You will and we seek help, Until peoples returned to their dwellings; Were it not for the King and were it not for us, they would not have departed. You do not see a group, few or many, But that there has become among them a trace of us. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: O you saddle that a swift, strong-footed she-camel With hard hooves carries away, When you come upon the Prophet, say to him, A duty upon you when the assembly is seated: O best of those who rode mounts and of those who walked Upon the dust when souls are counted, We fulfilled what you covenanted with us, While the horses bite the champions and champ, When there flowed from all the branches of Buhthah A host by which the mountain passes rumble, Until we came upon the people of Makkah in the morning with a legion, Gray-white, led by the brave, frowning hero— From every strong-necked one of Sulaym, upon whom Is a white coat of mail, tightly woven, and a helmet. He drinks the spear when he dares in battle, And you would think him a lion when he frowns. He charges the battalion marked, and in his hand Is a sharp sword with which he cuts, and a piercing lance. And at Ḥunayn there fulfilled from our host A thousand whom the Messenger reinforced, a mighty throng. They were a shield before the Muslims, And the sun that day was most austere upon them. We advance, and God guards us with His protection, And God does not lose one whom He guards. We held at al-Manāqib a station With which God was pleased—so excellent is the station. And on the morning of Awṭās, we launched an assault That sufficed against the enemy, and it was said of it: “Hold back!” Hawāzin calls to us by brotherhood between us— A breast that Hawāzin extends, withered. Until we left their host as if it were A caravan that beasts of prey follow, torn apart. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: We helped the Messenger of God—whoever is angry for him— With a thousand warriors, whose unmounted ones cannot be counted. We carried for him in the socket of the spear a banner With which his helper supplies him in the whirl of death. And we dyed it with blood, so that is its color, On the morning of Ḥunayn, the day when Ṣafwān was caught in its branches. We were for Islam a right wing for him, And to us belonged the knot of the banner and its display. We were for him, apart from the troops, an inner circle— He consults us in his affair, and we consult him. He called us and named us the vanguard, placing us forward, And we were a help to him against one who opposed him. May God reward Muḥammad, a prophet, with good, And may He support him with victory—and God is his supporter. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: Who will convey to the peoples that Muḥammad Is the Messenger of God, rightly guided wherever he aims? He called his Lord and sought God’s help alone, And by morning He had fulfilled it for him and bestowed favor. We traveled by night and appointed with Muḥammad at Qudayd, He leading us in a matter from God, made firm. They pressed on with us in the dawn until they saw clearly, With the dawn, youths and a thicket set straight, Upon horses, our coats of mail fastened upon us, And footmen like the rush of a torrent, a mighty host. For the chiefs of the tribe, if you ask, Are Sulaym, and among them are those who submitted. And an army of the Anṣār who do not forsake him— They obeyed, so they do not disobey him as long as he speaks. If you have appointed Khālid over the people And put him forward, then he has indeed gone forward With an army that God guided—you are its commander— Through which you strike in truth whoever was most unjust. I swore a righteous oath to Muḥammad, And I completed it: a thousand horses, bridled. And the Prophet of the believers said: Advance! And it was dear to us that you be the one placed forward. And we spent the night at the bend of al-Mustadīr, and there was not In us fear, except out of desire and prudence. We obeyed you until all the people submitted, And until we came in the morning upon the host, the people of Yalamlam. The piebald, rose-colored stallion goes astray in its midst, And the old man is not at ease until he is branded. From early morning until we left in the evening Ḥunayn, its flowing tears having become blood. We rose against them, and the sand-grouse turned back in a flock at forenoon, And each one you see holding back from his brother. When you will, from every one you see a leap, And its rider falls, and a shattered spear. Hawāzin had already secured their herd from us, And it was dear to them that we fail and be deprived. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: If you see, O Umm Farwah, our horses, Some of them idle, being led, and lame— The clashing of the enemies has weakened their blood; In them are piercing wounds that gush— Then many a woman says: Our onslaught sufficed her In the crush of wars, so her herd is not startled. No delegation is like the delegation who bound for us A bond with the rope of Muḥammad that is not cut— A delegation in which Abū Qaṭan and Ḥuzābah are, And Abū al-Ghuyūth and Wāsiʿ and al-Miqnaʿ, And the leader of the hundred with which he fulfilled Nine hundred, so a thousand bald ones were completed. The Banū ʿAwf and the clan of Mukhāshin gathered Six, and I count from Khufāf four. There, when the Prophet was helped by our thousand, The Prophet bound for us a banner that gleams. We won with his banner, and his covenant bequeathed The glory of life and a lordship that is not removed. And on the morning when we were with the Prophet, his wing, In the plains of Makkah while the spears quivered, Our answer to the caller of our Lord In truth, from us, was one unveiled and one veiled— In every ample coat of mail whose rings were chosen By David when he wove iron, and Tubbaʿ. And we had at the two wells of Ḥunayn a riding party That smashed hypocrisy, and a hill that is not uprooted. The Prophet was helped by us, and we were a people—in every calamity we harm and benefit. We drove off Hawāzin that day with spears, While the horses were covered by rising dust, When the Prophet feared their edge, and they supported A host by which the sun nearly lowers its gaze. The Banū Jusham are called, and in its midst are called The branches of Naṣr, while the spearheads are leveled, Until when the Messenger Muḥammad said: O Banū Sulaym, you have fulfilled—so raise up! We returned, and were it not for us, their might would have swept away The believers, and they would have secured what they gathered. And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said on the day of Ḥunayn: The remaining bond with Umm Muʾammal has been cut By a consequence, and she has replaced intention with betrayal. She swore by God that she would not cut the ties, But she was not truthful in it, nor did she keep the oath— A Khufāfiyyah whose summer abode is the belly of al-ʿAqīq, And in the desert she camps at Wajrah then al-ʿUrfā. If Umm Muʾammal follows the disbelievers, Then she has provisioned my heart, despite her distance, with love-sickness. And the informed one will soon tell her that we Refused and sought no ally other than our Lord, And that we, with the rightly guiding Prophet Muḥammad, Fulfilled—and no people fulfilled it fully—a thousand. With truthful youths of Sulaym, mighty, Who obeyed, so they do not disobey a single letter of his command. Khufāf and Dhakwān and ʿAwf—you would think them Difficult stallions that strut in their herds, dark-hued. It is as if the gray-white and white woven mail is clothing Lions that met in their lairs, with drooping ears. Through us the religion of God is mighty, without pretense, And we added to the tribe that was with him a double. At Makkah when we came, as if our banner were An eagle that desired, after its soaring, to snatch, Upon the pupils of the eyes—you would think among them, When it moved in its circles, the sound of jinn. On the morning when we trod upon the polytheists and found No equivalent or turning away from the command of the Messenger of God, In a battlefield where the people in its midst hear From us no muttering except mutual urging and the cracking of skulls, With white swords we make the heads fly from their resting places, And we pluck the necks of champions with them, plucking. How many a slain man we left, gashed, And a widow calling upon her husband in grief. We intend the pleasure of God—we do not seek the pleasure of people— And to God belongs what appears, all of it, and what is hidden.
