The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
تعبئة جيش المسلمين وَعَبَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَصْحَابَهُ وَصَفَّهُمْ صُفُوفًا فِي السَّحَرِ، وَوَضَعَ الْأَلْوِيَةَ وَالرَّايَاتِ فِي أَهْلِهَا، وَلَبِسَ دِرْعَيْنِ وَالْمِغْفَرَ وَالْبَيْضَةَ، وَرَكِبَ بَغْلَتَهُ الْبَيْضَاءَ، وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الصُّفُوفَ، وَطَافَ عَلَيْهِمَا بَعْضَهَا خَلْفَ بَعْضٍ يَنْحَدِرُونَ، فَحَضَّهُمْ عَلَى الْقِتَالِ وَبَشَّرَهُمْ بِالْفَتْحِ إِنْ صَدَقُوا وَصَبَرُوا، وَقَدَّمَ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فِي بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَأَهْلِ مَكَّةَ، وَجَعَلَ مَيْمَنَةً وَمَيْسَرَةً وَقَلْبًا، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - ﷺ فِيهِ. قال ابن الجوزي: وَعَبَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَصْحَابَهُ فِي السَّحَرِ وَصَفَّهُمْ صُفُوفًا وَوَضَعَ الْأَلْوِيَةَ وَالرَّايَاتِ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ، فَمَعَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ لِوَاءٌ يَحْمِلُهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَرَايَةٌ يَحْمِلُهَا سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، [وَرَايَةٌ يَحْمِلُهَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ]، وَلِوَاءُ الْخَزْرَجِ يَحْمِلُهُ حُبَابُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، وَلِوَاءُ الْأَوْسِ مَعَ أُسَيْدِ بْنِ حُضَيْرٍ، وَرَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَغْلَتَهُ الْبَيْضَاءَ الَّتِي تُسَمَّى الدُّلْدُلَ، وَلَبِسَ دِرْعَيْنِ وَالْمِغْفَرَ وَالْبَيْضَةَ ذِكْرُ تَعْبِئَةِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ عَسْكَرَهُمْ قَالَ شُيُوخُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ: لَمَّا كَانَ ثُلْثَا اللَّيْلِ عَمِدَ مَالِكُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَعَبَّأَهُمْ فِي وَادِي حُنَيْنٍ، وَهُوَ وَادٍ أَجْوَفُ خُطُوطٌ ذُو شِعَابٍ وَمَضَايِقَ، وَفَرَّقَ النَّاسَ فِيهَا، وَأَوْعَزَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ يَحْمِلُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابِهِ حَمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً.
Translation
✧ The mobilization of the Muslim army The Messenger of Allah ﷺ marshaled his companions and arrayed them in ranks at dawn, placed the banners and standards with their bearers, donned two coats of mail, the helmet, and the headpiece, mounted his white mule, faced the ranks, and passed among them as they descended one behind another, urging them to fight and giving them glad tidings of victory if they were truthful and patient. He placed Khālid b. al-Walīd at the head of the Banū Sulaym and the people of Makkah, and appointed a right wing, a left wing, and a center, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was. Ibn al-Jawzī said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ marshaled his companions at dawn and arrayed them in ranks and placed the banners and standards with his companions. With the Muhājirūn was a banner carried by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and a standard carried by Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, [and a standard carried by ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb], and the banner of the Khazraj was carried by Ḥubāb b. al-Mundhir, and the banner of the Aws was with Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his white mule called al-Duldul, and donned two coats of mail, the helmet, and the headpiece. The account of the polytheists' mobilization of their army The shaykhs of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: When two-thirds of the night had passed, Mālik b. ʿAwf went to his companions and marshaled them in the valley of Ḥunayn, which is a hollow valley with winding paths, ravines, and narrow passages. He dispersed the men throughout them and ordered them to make a single charge against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions.
