The Detachment of Khālid b. al-Walīd ᴿᴬ after the Conquest to Banū Jadhīmah of Kinānah

Translation

✧ Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge narrated to me that it was related on the authority of Ibrāhīm b. Jaʿfar al-Maḥmūdī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I saw as if I had eaten a morsel of ḥays (a dish of dates and clarified butter) and I enjoyed its taste, but something from it stuck in my throat when I swallowed it. Then ʿAlī inserted his hand and removed it.” Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ said: “O Messenger of God ﷺ, this is one of your expeditions that you dispatch: some of what you desire will come to you from it, and in part of it there will be an obstruction, then you will send ʿAlī and he will make it easy.” Ibn Hishām said: He also narrated to me that a man from the people escaped and came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Did anyone object to him?” He said: “Yes, a white man of medium height objected to him, but Khālid silenced him and he fell quiet; and another tall, restless man objected to him and disputed with him, and their dispute became intense.” ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: “As for the first, O Messenger of God ﷺ, it was my son ʿAbd Allāh; as for the other, it was Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm narrated to me, from Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, who said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ summoned ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ and said: “O ʿAlī, go out to these people and look into their affair, and place the affair of the Age of Ignorance beneath your feet.” So ʿAlī went out until he came to them, bringing with him wealth that the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent. He paid blood money for them and compensated what had been taken of their property, until he even compensated them for the dog's drinking bowl. When nothing of blood or property remained uncompensated, a remainder of the wealth was still with him. After he had finished with them, ʿAlī ؓ said to them: “Is there any remaining blood or property of yours that has not been compensated?” They said: “No.” He said: “Then I give you this remainder of this wealth as a precaution for the Messenger of God ﷺ, regarding what he knows and you do not know.” He did so. Then he returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news. He said: “You have acted rightly and well.” He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up, faced the qiblah, standing with his hands raised, until the area beneath his shoulders could be seen, saying: “O God, I declare myself innocent before You of what Khālid b. al-Walīd has done,” three times.
