Translation

✧ The Detachment of Khālid b. al-Walīd ؓ after the Conquest to Banū Jadhīmah of Kinānah The Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid ؓ to Banū Jadhīmah, and that was in the eighth year of the Hijrah during the conquest of Makkah, with three hundred and fifty men, calling to Islam, not to fight. Khālid marched until he came to a water source among the waters of Banū Jadhīmah. They came out against him with weapons, so he said to them: "Put down your weapons, for the people have embraced Islam." When they put down their weapons, Khālid then ordered them to be bound, then he exposed them to the sword and killed those he killed among them. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ learned of that, he became angry and disavowed what Khālid had done. The Prophet ﷺ sent to the people, and with him was wealth to pay blood money for the slain. He did so until no blood remained unrequited, and some of the wealth remained, so he left it for the people as a precaution. Khālid excused himself for killing those he killed by saying that he did not kill them except according to the opinion of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah, one of the senior Companions, and that when he came upon the people, they did not know how to say "āmannā" (we believe), so they said "ṣabaʾnā ṣabaʾnā" (we have become Sabians, we have become Sabians).
