The story of Abraham the Friend (peace and blessings be upon him)

Translation

✧ The people of Madyan were the Companions of the Thicket. Al-Aykah (the Thicket) is intertwined trees. They were an Arab people dwelling in their city Madyan, which is a village in the land of Muʿān on the outskirts of Syria, on the side toward the Hijaz, near the lake of the people of Lot. They came after them by a short period. Madyan is a tribe after which the city was named, and they are from the Banū Madyan b. Madyān b. Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl (peace and blessings be upon him). Madyan was the home of Shuʿayb, and al-Aykah was behind Madyan. His ancient name was Yabrūn. This I copied from the handwriting of Ibn al-Munādī. Some people said: Yathrūn, with a yāʾ and after it a thāʾ. Al-Sharqī b. al-Qaṭāmī—and he was learned in genealogies—said: He is Yathrūn in Hebrew, and Shuʿayb in Arabic. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī said: Abū Jād, Hawwāz, Ḥuṭṭī, Kalamūn, Saʿfaṣ, and Qurayshāt, the Banū al-Amḥaḍ b. Jandal b. Yaʿṣub b. Madyan b. Ibrāhīm, were kings. Abū Jād was king of Makkah and the parts of Tihāmah adjoining it. Hawwāz and Ḥuṭṭī were kings of Wajj, which is al-Ṭāʾif. Saʿfaṣ and Qurayshāt were kings of Madyan, then Kalamūn succeeded them. The punishment of the Day of the Shadow took place during his reign. Ḥālifah bt. Kalamūn—and in one narration: the sister of Kalamūn—said, elegizing him: Kalamūn—his destruction shattered my pillar amid the settlement; the lord of the people, death came to him as fire amid a shadow; I was seared by fire, and their abode became like the vanishing mirage.
