The Conquest of Makkah

Translation

✧ His ﷺ consultation with Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ regarding the expedition against Quraysh Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated from Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyyah – may Allah have mercy on him – from Abu Malik al-Ashjaʿi ؓ who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from one of his chambers and sat at its door – and when he sat alone, no one would come to him until he called him. He said, “Call Abu Bakr for me.” So he came and Abu Bakr sat before him, and he conversed privately with him for a long while. Then he ordered him, and he sat on his right. Then he said, “Call Umar for me.” So he came and sat next to Abu Bakr, and he conversed privately with him for a long while. Then Umar raised his voice and said: “O Messenger of Allah, they are the head of disbelief. They are the ones who claimed that you are a sorcerer, that you are a soothsayer, that you are a liar, and that you are a fabricator.” Umar did not leave out anything of what the people of Makkah used to say except that he mentioned it. Then he ordered him to sit on the other side, and so one of them sat on his right and the other on his left. Then he called the people and said: “Shall I tell you of the like of these two companions of yours?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He turned his face toward Abu Bakr and said: “Verily, Ibrahim was softer regarding Allah, the Exalted, than soft oil.” Then he turned to Umar and said: “Verily, Nuh was harder regarding Allah than stone, and the matter is Umar’s matter. So prepare and help one another.” They followed Abu Bakr, and they said: “O Abu Bakr, we disliked to ask Umar about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ privately told you.” He said: “He said to me: ‘How do you advise me regarding the expedition to Makkah?’” He said: “I said: O Messenger of Allah! They are your people” – until I thought that he would follow my advice. Then he called Umar, and Umar said: “They are the head of disbelief,” until he mentioned to him every evil thing they used to say. And by Allah, by Allah, the Arabs will not be humiliated until the people of Makkah are humiliated. He has commanded you to strive in jihad so that they may raid Makkah.
