The Expedition of Muʾtah
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the people went on until, when they were at the borders of al-Balqāʾ, the gatherings of Heraclius from the Byzantines and the Arabs met them at a village of the villages of al-Balqāʾ called Mashārif. Then the enemy drew near, and the Muslims withdrew to a village called Muʾtah. The people met at it, and the Muslims arrayed themselves for them, placing on their right wing a man from Banū ʿUdhrah called Quṭbah b. Qatādah, and on their left wing a man from the Anṣār called ʿAbāyah b. Mālik. Al-Wāqidī said: Rabīʿah b. ʿUthmān narrated to me, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: I witnessed Muʾtah, and when the polytheists drew near to us, we saw what no one could withstand, of equipment, weapons, horses, brocade, silk, and gold. My eyesight was dazzled, so Thābit b. Aqram said to me: 'O Abū Hurayrah, it is as though you see many gatherings!' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You did not witness Badr with us; we were not granted victory by multitude.'
