The story of Abraham the Friend (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ So Allah the Exalted sent Lot ﷺ, and that was in the middle of Abraham's lifetime. He was sent to the people of Sodom, in the land of the Ghor of Zughar, which was the mother of that region, having land, works, and attached villages. Its people were among the most wicked of mankind, the most disbelieving, the most evil in disposition, and the worst in secret and public conduct. They cut off the road, and in their assemblies they committed abominations; they did not forbid one another any abomination they did. Evil indeed was what they used to do. They originated an indecency that no one among the children of Adam had preceded them to: the coming to males among the worlds, and abandoning what Allah had created of women for His righteous servants. Lot called them to the worship of Allah the Exalted alone, with no partner, and forbade them from engaging in these forbidden acts, the reprehensible indecencies, and the abhorrent deeds. But they persisted in their misguidance and tyranny, and continued in their wickedness and disbelief. Along with that, they used to cut off the road, betray the companion, and in their assemblies—their gathering place and the place of their talk and their night conversation—they would commit abomination of various kinds of sayings and deeds, to the extent that it was said: they used to break wind in their gatherings and not feel ashamed before those sitting with them. Perhaps a great act would occur from them in the assemblies and they would not disdain it, nor would they desist at the admonition of an admonisher or the counsel of an advisor. In that and other things, they were like cattle; nay, they were further astray in path. Mujāhid said: Some of them used to have intercourse with one another in the assemblies. The scholars of biography said: Lot used to call them to the worship of Allah and forbid them from indecency, but his threat did not deter them, nor did it increase them except in arrogance. So Allah brought down upon them such severe punishment as cannot be repelled, which had never crossed their minds or thoughts, and made them an exemplary punishment among the worlds and a lesson for the intelligent among the learned.
