Translation

✧ [The number of those whom he carried with ʿAmr b. Umayyah] These were the ones whom the Negus carried with ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī in the two ships. The total number of those who arrived in the two ships to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sixteen men. [The rest of the emigrants to Abyssinia] Among those who emigrated to the land of Abyssinia, and did not arrive until after Badr, and whom the Negus did not carry in the two ships to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and among those who arrived after that, and those who perished in the land of Abyssinia, from the emigrants to Abyssinia: [From Banū Umayyah] From Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb al-Asadī, of Asad Khuzaymah, an ally of Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams, with him his wife Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān, and his daughter Ḥabībah bt. ʿUbayd Allāh, by whom Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān was given her kunyah, and her name was Ramlah. [The Christianization of Ibn Jaḥsh in Abyssinia and the Messenger's marriage to his wife after him] He went out with the Muslims as an emigrant, but when he arrived in the land of Abyssinia he became a Christian there and left Islam, and he died there as a Christian. After him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married his wife, Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān b. Ḥarb. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from ʿUrwah, who said: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh went out with the Muslims as a Muslim — but when he arrived in the land of Abyssinia he became a Christian. He said: When he passed by the Muslims among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he would say: "We have opened our eyes, and you are still squinting." That is, "We have come to see clearly, while you are still seeking sight and have not yet seen." That is because the puppy, when it wants to open its eyes to look, squints before doing so. He coined that as a proverb for them: meaning, "We have opened our eyes and seen, while you have not opened your eyes to see, and you are still seeking that." Ibn Isḥāq said: And Qays b. ʿAbd Allāh, a man from Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah, and he was the father of Umayyah bt. Qays who was with Umm Ḥabībah — and his wife Barakah bt. Yasār, a freedwoman of Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb; the two of them were the foster-mothers of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh and Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān — so the two of them went out with them, accompanying them when they emigrated to the land of Abyssinia. Two men. [From Banū Asad] From Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy: Yazīd b. Zamʿah b. al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad, who was killed on the day of Ḥunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a martyr, and ʿAmr b. Umayyah b. al-Ḥārith b. Asad — he perished in the land of Abyssinia. Two men. [From Banū ʿAbd al-Dār] From Banū ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy: Abū al-Rūm b. ʿUmayr b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār; and Firās b. al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith b. Kaladah b. ʿAlqamah b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār. Two men. [From Banū Zuhrah] From Banū Zuhrah b. Kilāb b. Murrah: al-Muṭṭalib b. Azhar b. ʿAbd ʿAwf b. ʿAbd (b.) al-Ḥārith b. Zuhrah, with him his wife Ramlah bt. Abī ʿAwf b. Ḍubayrah b. Suʿayd b. Saʿd b. [From Banū Taym] From Banū Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy: ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym, who was killed at al-Qādisiyyah with Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. One man. Sufyān, who was killed in the year of al-Yarmūk in Syria during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ — there is doubt as to whether he was killed there or not; and Hishām b. Abī Ḥudhayfah b. al-Mughīrah. Three persons. [From Banū Jumaḥ] From Banū Jumaḥ b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb: Ḥāṭib b. al-Ḥārith b. Maʿmar b. Ḥabīb b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Ḥāṭib perished there as a Muslim, and his wife and his two sons — she being their mother — arrived in one of the two ships? And his brother Ḥaṭṭāb b. al-Ḥārith, with him his wife Fukayhah bt. Yasār; he perished there as a Muslim, and his wife Fukayhah arrived in one of the two ships. And Sufyān b. Maʿmar b. Ḥabīb, and his two sons Junādah and Jābir, and their mother Ḥasanah was with him, and their maternal brother Shuraḥbīl b. Ḥasanah. Qays, who was killed in the year of al-Yarmūk during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ. And al-Sāʾib b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays, who was wounded at al-Ṭāʾif with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and was killed on the day of Fiḥl during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ — and it is said: he was killed on the day of Khaybar, there is doubt about it; and ʿUmayr b.
