Translation
✧ The wager that took place among Quraysh that the people of Khaybar would defeat the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Al-Bayhaqī narrated from ʿUrwa, and from Mūsā b. ʿUqba, and from Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Ḥazm—may Allah Almighty have mercy on them—they said—and the wording is that of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar: Ḥuwayṭib—with a ḍamma on the unpointed ḥāʾ, a sukūn on the two-dot yāʾ, and a kasra on the unpointed ṭāʾ—b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ؓ used to say: I turned away from the truce of al-Ḥudaybiya, certain that Muḥammad ﷺ would prevail over all creation, yet the zeal of Satan refused anything but that I cling to my religion. Then ʿAbbās—with a doubled bāʾ—b. Mirdās—with a kasra on the mīm—al-Sulamī came to us, informing us that Muḥammad ﷺ had marched to Khaybar, and that Khaybar had gathered its forces against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so Muḥammad would not escape, until ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said: Whoever wishes, I will wager with him that Muḥammad will not escape. I said: I stake against you. Then Ṣafwān b. Umayya said: I am with you, O ʿAbbās. And Nawfal b. Muʿāwiya al-Daylamī said: I am with you, O ʿAbbās. And a group of Quraysh joined me, so we wagered one hundred camels, in fifths, against one hundred camels. I and my party said: Muḥammad ﷺ will prevail, while ʿAbbās and his party said: Ghaṭafān will prevail. Then news came of the victory of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Ḥuwayṭib and his party took the stake.
