The Expedition of Khaybar

Translation

✧ ʿAlī ؓ Uprooting the Gate of Khaybar Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan narrated to me, from some of his family, from Abū Rāfiʿ, the client of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: We went out with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him with his banner. When he drew near the fort, its people came out to him and he fought them. A man from the Jews struck him and knocked his shield from his hand. ʿAlī took hold of a gate that was near the fort and shielded himself with it. It remained in his hand while he fought until Allah—exalted be He—granted him victory. Then he cast it from his hand when he had finished. I saw myself among a group of seven, I being the eighth, straining to turn over that gate, and we could not turn it over. Al-Bayhaqī narrated through two chains from al-Muṭṭalib b. Ziyād, from Layth b. Abī Sulaym, from Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī ؓ, from his forefathers, who said: Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh ؓ narrated to me that ʿAlī ؓ carried the gate on the day of Khaybar until the Muslims climbed upon it and conquered it, and that it was tested afterwards but forty men could not carry it—its narrators are trustworthy except Layth b. Abī Sulaym, who is weak. Al-Bayhaqī said: It was also narrated through another weak chain from Jābir, who said: Seventy men gathered for it, and their utmost effort was to restore the gate. I say: Al-Ḥākim narrated it.
