Translation

✧ [Ibn Isḥāq's Question to al-Zuhrī About the Verse of the Emigrant Women] Ibn Isḥāq said: I asked al-Zuhrī about this verse, and the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic, in it: “And if any of your wives have gone away from you to the disbelievers, and you have retaliated, then give to those whose wives have gone the like of what they have spent, and fear God in whom you are believers” [Q 60:11]. He said: It means: if any of you loses his wife to the disbelievers, and no woman comes to you from them from whom you may take the like of what they take from you, then compensate them from the booty if you obtain it. When this verse was revealed: “O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants” up to the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic: “and do not hold fast to the ties of disbelieving women” [Q 60:10], among those who divorced was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He divorced his wife Quraybah bt. Abī Umayyah b. al-Mughīrah, and after him Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān married her, while they were both upon their polytheism in Makkah, and Umm Kulthūm bt. Jarwal, the mother of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar, of Khuzāʿah, and Abū Jahm b. Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, a man of his people, married her, while they were both upon their polytheism.
